• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Closed Segment Project 1441

The best thing I brought is a Beall spindle tap now I only use 1 chuck for cole jaws.
All you do is bore a hole & thread you're wast block true up the front & glue your base to it,
part off reuse. I have lots of them.Tap at Beall's about $28 us.A lot cheaper than a chuck.
I noticed in 1 of your earlier posts you said you didn't have a second chuck. A oneway live centre
works very well if you get a spindle adapter for it as well.

Peter, my biggest concern with having to swap out my chuck jaws with the jumbo jaws each and every time I add a ring is to register my bowl body back to where it started from. I ensure my tenon on the waste block is deep enough but still allows the face of the jaws to register it back to flat. I also ensure the size of the tenon is very close to where the jaws are completely closed to allow for the greater grip. I don't think I could count on that happening with a wood thread given the fact that it would be off and on about 25 times on this bowl. I do have the tap in question and find it works great for some projects.

That being said I think the best method is the one that works for you.

So as you probably guessed, today is turning day. Pretty straight forward, kept an eye in the wall thickness, built a disc to use as a steady while turning on the outside.

Did some power sanding and then decided to add a couple of coats of Wipe on Poly. I thought this may help fill some pores in the wedge. I will power sand it again to cut back the finish. I will then part off the bowl, finish the bottom and then apply the finish.

Gotta love applying the first coat of finish.

Beautiful. I like the stabilizing disc are the screws so it can easily be removed. Now for the normal non turner question that some of us also wonder about. Do you have any idea how many hours you have invested in it and based on the Seg Pro pricing do you think you can sell it and end up making minimum wages? Personally I couldn't imagine selling it, well maybe trading for a Robust American Beauty.

Are you lusting over a Robust American Beauty also??

Thank you Stuart. The screws were in fact an after thought as I could not get the disc out. Just nothing to grip on. I didn't even look at what the Segment Pro calculator valued my piece at. I will check it out and report back. I am using a MAC and have to reboot every time I want to use the software. Not a big deal though. I am also a number of builds behind so I should take the time to do that. Time wise, no real idea but it has been pretty steady for the last two weeks. I most likely will use this piece in our April 2017 competition. And no I probably will not sell it.

Stuart looking at Segment Pro and the default settings it brings it in at $1097. The ring count is off by 60 so it should be a bit more. So that's about $1400 Canadian. Do I think I can get that, not likely. Like I said above I will not sell it anyway. Why do I build them? Because I can and it keeps me busy. I don't seem to have any problem occupying my time in the workshop.

Bob, in 2012 I decided I could save my money and be able to stay an additional 2 months in the old folks home when the end got near or I could buy an American Beauty. Guess which won out.

Glenn, $1400 isn't out of the question at a decent gallery and could very possibly be on the low side. If I was you I would be satisfied to be looking at a $1400 plus piece of art in my display case.

Glenn,
Well done, excellent work. I had a bowl in our national exhibition and competition which I wanted to keep and I had to put a very high price on it so that nobody would buy it. Guess what it was purchased by somebody who I was told really liked it and price did not matter. So if you do exhibit your excellent bowl I suggest you put a few extra zeros on the end $1400 to be safe.:):)

Thanks Bob, was a very fun project.
