• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

segmented rings seperated

After turning my project down to a quarter of a inch I noticed 2 rings had slight separation. One ring pops out the next ring pops in about 0.005. This is 2 different areas so there are 4 rings 2 seems in issue. I think this happened in my haste to turn it after just 6 hours of dry glue time. I only turned the outside down, and it was .750 thick material, but I will never do that again. I already have a few coats of danish oil on the african mahogany. Can I flood the seems with ca glue let it dry and sand it smooth. I think if I clamp it in side and outside, it will just separate again. You cannot see any daylight thru the seems, so I think wood glue wood not flow into the center, or adhere to the oil. Also if I just sand smooth like it is will it continue to separate. I am thinking I am just going to have to do the hole project over as a lesson to let the glue dry!

Mikeh, a picture would certainly help to visualize the issue. If you are still able to hold the piece on your chuck I think I would part off the offending piece, re-flatten the rings and then add a new ring. I think you would be happier than leaving it if there is a gap.

Already parted it off. There are 6 rings seem separation between 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th. Totally disassembly, and being just a quarter of a inch thin no way to remount it. You can't hardly see the gap but can feel it. The rings were flattened up on the drum sander and immediately glued togeher. So I think they are flat, just movement on the diameter.

Its not unusual when you put a segmented piece together, turn and sand it smooth and the next day you can feel each segment. A quick resend by hand with a 320 grit usually fixes it though. I once made a bowl with segmented and solid wood and I could not get a smooth transition. I sanded and re-sanded but the movement of the wood made it a poor joint. It eventually failed.

It is loose I can push it in, I wondering if the ca glue would lock it in.

I wouldn't do anything for a couple weeks giving it time to finish any movement. Then give it a light sanding. If that knocks down the ridges and after another week they don't reappear go ahead and finish. CA will probably stain the wood.

I used original titebond. Thanks for your input Glen, and Stuart.
I will just apply the glue on the inside in a few weeks.

Glen and Stuart points are good. It is a good practice to let the piece set for a couple of weeks to totally cure out before final finish.

If you end up with a slightly noticeable seam between the rings you glued, I sometimes with the piece on the lathe apply thin CA, turn the lathe on at low speed and sand the area before the CA sets. The sanding fills the crack and the CA holds the sanding dust in place. Helps hide the seam.

Hope it works out for you. Let us see the final product.

Mike, I've used the glue and sand before as well. Only, I use Tight Bond and add a bit then sand. This creates a slurry that fills the gap. I've got a couple pictures showing the results if I can find them. Of course good tight joint will win every time.
