Ok, I have a project I trying to get things together for. It's going to be a small segmented vessel that I need one row that will be 1/4" high that need to be blue! I'm looking at 18 segment and about 3" diameter. Am I going to have to glue a bunch of thin veneer together to make the 1/4" or is there another way. Suggestions PLEASE :)

Bob.
If you are not concerned with the blue ring having the segment lines, why not do a inlay of epoxy. Epoxy can be colored to whatever blue you want.
Another option is to just paint the ring blue after the bowl is turned.

I have done similar things using inlace. See attached.

I am not exactly sure what your question is but are you saying thin veneer = 1/4" thick, about the blue colour, i am making my own wood dyes using biro type refills and cellulose thinners, so far the results look promising, heres my latest turning, unknown fir tree felled less than 2 weeks ago and dried in the microwave after turning the pieces less than 1/4" thick, the colours range from dark mahogany to light then red home made, the inside of the bowl is home made blue cheers Dave

Hi David,
I'm trying to get my stuff together for making a small segmented vase.
One of the segmented rows need to be blue
Also in a tornado swirl I need a blue row, so that would be individual segments blue
This is what it looks like in WTP

Bob, along time ago I saw something about a guy that grew colored wood. I think it was Aspen or Poplar. He injected colored dye into the root system and I think into the actual tree. The tree takes up the dye and is colored. I'm not sure of the time frame or years it takes so it might not work for you but if you start now and plant a tree or two who knows what you'll have.

Can you see that 10 years after I'm gone some fool cuts down the tree and it's blue. What kind of disease is this!!
