• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

special glue up of segments

I have a friend that wants to do a ring glue up where the short section of the segment is on the outside. He has got it to work using 30 degrees which gives him a 6 sided ring. He wants to use an 8 segment ring but it doesn't work. Is there a way to design this in segment pro or someplace else?

Can you give a better explanation on what your friend is trying to build? How can a smaller circumference be the outside edge with a larger circumference being the inside edge of a ring?

I've been known to occasionally make the inside larger than the outside when doing chunk turning. All it does is make you say bad words. I also would like to know what your friend is trying to build.

After thinking about this a bit you might be able to accomplish this by making two cuts. Cut your first segment with the first angle. Once you have all the segments cut and the ring made re cut the segments. The attached is a poor drawing of what I mean.

imo, there is no way to plan a segmented project using WTP or SP to accomplish what the OP is asking.

Mike, I agree. At best it would be an illusion. I don't think it has anything to do with either WTP or SP. I would like to see what he has come up with for the six sided ring Rod spoke about. If we could see it we might be able to make a guess.

I'd be interested in knowing what he's trying to do as well.

However, it is academic. Segment PRO is completely focused on an easy interface to make 'standard' segmented bowls. Woodturner PRO lets you customize the settings of every row but a segment is always a trapezoid made by flipping the board after every cut.

This is actually good news for your friend. If I were to write the code to make it easy to do his special technique, it would become easy to understand and everyone could begin doing it. The technique that makes his turnings so special would become ho-hum because everyone would be doing it.

I will try to get a picture of what his six segment ring looks like. He likes doing a lot of experimenting. What he want is to get a mix of end grain and long grain.

Woodturner PRO might let you do what you want in both Woodturner PRO and Segment PRO. You can have as many species as you want and if you wanted to have one image of side grain and another of end grain, you can have both of those species available in either software. In WTP, you simply have the default species for that row as the side grain image and then paint every other segment with the end grain species.
In Segment PRO, you would be able to have both the end grain and side grain species as two different species in the palette and then use the Paint screen to paint the segments you want to have the two different species. This would, of course, require the bowl to be the Painted Segment bowl type.
