• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Feature ring size

I am a newbie with Woodturner pro. I believe I understand the basics of designing a feature ring in Laminate pro, but I have not figured out how to size each segment nor how to adjust the design to allow for cutting the segment to size. Help!!

To make a Lamination PRO design into a feature for Woodturner PRO you simply have to match a couple dimensions. First, the Segment Edge Length of the target row in WTP needs to be the width of the repeating unit in LamPRO. Secondly, the height of the ring in WTP needs to be the Clipping Region height of LamPRO.

Getting the width of the design is done by trial and error and is mostly controlled by the width of cut of the strips from the laminated board. Simply changing this measurement will make the design larger or smaller, obviously, but the pattern of the design remains the same. From an appearance standpoint, though, it might also be necessary to adjust the species widths in the Laminate Wizard.

When you transfer the design from LamPRO to WTP, it will show you the dimensions of the height and width and there is also a checkbox that tells the software to 'stretch' the image to fill the segment. If you check this box, though, the calculated geometry of the design is no longer valid. I often check this box, but only when I create a design (a diamond, for example) that I want to use generically so that I can see what a WTP vessel would look like with a diamond pattern.

You are familiar with the method of transferring the design from LamPRO to WTP directly, but you can also save the image to your disk drive and then add it as a custom species. To do this, export the image to a file from LamPRO and then go to WTP and go File > Options and select the 'Custom Species' option. Give the design a species name and then click the '...' to browse to the place where you saved the file. Give any height and width and then check the 'stretch' box. This will permanently add this design to your species list.

When you transfer a design directly from LamPRO to WTP, it is added to the species list for that plan only. It is saved in the .wtp file so that when you open it later, the design is still there. If you want it to be available in other plans, add it as a custom species as described above.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and welcome to the Woodturner PRO Community!

You may want to design your bowl first using 3D Pro , importing the shape into WTP.

WTP will give you the dimensions of each segment.

As Lloyd stated, once you know the segment lengh you can adjust LamPro to get the board dimensions for your design.

You may also want to learn and use SketchUp for designing featured rings.

Welcome to the forum.

The work flow I recommend is to start in 3DP to make your profile and then transfer it to WTP to make the construction plan. With the dimension of the segments for the feature ring, go to Lamination PRO and make your feature ring and transfer it back to WTP.
To build the vessel, though, start by making the feature ring as that is the most difficult part of the vessel. Once it is done, take measurements of it and modify the WTP plan so that the feature ring matches the completed ring. Finally, adjust the rest of the rings to match the changes you made to the feature ring.

Just started using LP after a long hiatus. Can't figure out why LP doesn't ask for the diameter of the ring where the pattern is to be used as the diameter determines the required length of each segment. WTP calculates the length of the segments in, say, the feature ring. Do I then have to go back to LP and input the laminate cut width?

Bill,
To use Lamination PRO with Woodturner PRO, you really need to have a good idea of the size of ring that you're trying to fit. By starting in WTP, create a ring with the desired number of segments and then make note of the Segment Edge Length. Then switch to Lamination PRO and keep your eye on the width of the Repeating Unit as that needs to be the same as the Segment Edge Length of WTP.

As you suggested, changing the initial cut width in Lamination PRO is the best way to adjust the width of the Repeating unit.

Lloyd,
Thank you for your reply Lloyd. I'm surprised you have the time to keep in touch with your customers. Your answer is just a bit confusing. If I design the vessel first in WTP using 12 segs for a feature ring, isn't that the same as the number of "repeating units" in LP? Shouldn't I then set the "cut width" to half the seg length (for 1st Gen) and the "height" to match that in WTP?

Bill,

You don't necessarily have to design the vessel first in WTP, although I usually do. You can just create a single ring that is 9" in diameter, for example, and give it a height such as 1.5". Select the number of segments you want and you will then have the two numbers that you need to match in Lamination PRO - the Segment Edge Length and the Height of the row. The Segment Edge Length is the same as the width of the Repeating Unit and the Height will be set by you when you go to transfer the image to Woodturner PRO.

If you are making a simple zig-zag (chevron) pattern, you are correct in that the width of the cut is 1/2 of the Segment Edge Length and the two strips making the zig-zag will be exactly the same as the Segment Edge Length. But as soon as you go to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation, this is no longer the case and you have to rely on Lamination PRO's calculation of the width of the Repeating Unit. Make sure you have clicked the 'Details' button from LamPRO's toolbar as this will show you the Repeating Unit in real-time.

When you are ready to transfer the design to WTP, Lamination PRO needs to know how tall your design is. To do this, click the box in the left column that says 'Clipping Region' and give it the height you want to transfer. It will then show you the image that is going to be transferred. Click the 'Transfer to WTP' button and then give it a name for the 'species' and it will show you the width and height of the image to be transferred. If you check the box, it will force the image to be stretched to fit whatever row you have selected in WTP but your calculations in Lam PRO will no longer be correct.

If you give the image the same name as a prior transfer, it will overwrite the prior transfer.
