Rose Engine II ornamental turner machine for assembling open segments

I haven't posted anything in the forum for quite a while but I have been making quite a few open segmented bowls. I have since upgraded my laser to a Boss Laser 65 watt for the cutting of the segments which is way better than sawing. NO SANDIND at all. Also I built a Rose Engine II that I use for the assembly fixture as well as making a lot of ornamental turnings. I posted a video on you tube showing the use of the Rose Engine II for aseembly for my ornamental friends and thought you guys might be interested. Just look up Dale Maxim in the search bar and it should pop up.

Interesting.
Thanks for sharing.

My wood club has a 40W laser (Xtool S1) which I am looking at cutting segments with.

Just curious, how are you minimizing the burn marks on the sides of the segment?

I don't worry about the burn marks. If you set up the laser to just break thru the burn is not very deep on the sides. For open segment bowls I like the black on the sidewalls. It sets of the colors on the bowl and since my segments are only .25 thick it is not really noticeable. For the closed segment turnings the black is hidden in the glue joint. For a few woods the ash is noticeable on your hands ( purpleheart and wenge). On the rest it doesn't really wipe off. I have a good base program to generate the segments using Vcarve. If you want I can explain it to you over the phone in about 5 minutes. You'll be able to design a row in about 1 minute.

I also use VCarve Pro for drawing the segments. From Vcarve i can export an image to XTools.

Good to know about the burn marks. Was looking at adding tape on the top of the wood.
Have cut segments with the CNC machine using a 1/8th inch endmill. Works well but want to try the laser.
