• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

WTP defaults

Hi All,

Is there any way to have woodturner pro default to 16 or 24 segments when it opens? I keep getting 12 when importing from 3DP and it starts out with 12 segments per row when I open directly. Sometimes when I go through and change them to 16 I sometimes miss one and have to go back to the computer. My shop is a couple of miles away from where I live. I usually just print out a hard copy and take it with me. I know I will eventually learn to check this before I print but there has to be a way to change the default...isn't there?

Oh and BTW have there been any updates to this program recently?

Hi All,

In WTP the 12 segment is the default. There is no way to change that when the program opens. That was the most common count when the program was written over 15 years ago.

Here is what I do when using 3DP and WTP:
- Start 3DP and WTP
- create or use one of the 3DP designs.
- import wall profile into WTP, select WTP vessel view
- Add the first new ring (row 2) and change the number of segments that you want. (ex: 12 segments to 36)
WTP will remember the change in segments for each new ring you add.
- Click add rings till top of profile, then snap to profile
- If you have a featured ring you can modify that ring thickness and delete any rings above that makes the vessel taller than the 3DP profile
- Double check your rings using cutaway view for wall thickness to ensure enough glue surface
- print out summary

As mentioned no what to change the default from 12. WTP does remember the change you make to the first ring you make the change in for any additional rings you add. Same goes for ring thickness.

There has not been any recent update to WTP. 3.1.016 is the latest.

When you start a new file or close and open WTP it goes back to the default settings of 12 segments and 3/4 thick ring.
When you open a saved file WTP will remember the change you made. That is if you changed 12 segments to 36, and you go in and add a new ring it will be 36 segments.

I have been working on a new release of Segment PRO and it adds block mode for making basket weave vessels, an internal do you won’t have to export the data to a third party program and some other improvements and bug fixes.

Programming is a winter project for me, though, because now that I’m retired, I’m enjoying golf, travel, photography and gardening.

My customers have made it clear that they don’t want to pay for upgrades and do not want to pay an annual subscription. Your purchase is one-and-done meaning that you won’t ever pay a nickel for any upgrade. I will continue to add functionality more and then but the software already fits everything I intended for it to do.

I also will be looking to transition the company to a new owner and that will be a great time to come out with new functionality that Wei be a great time for a major upgrade that will justify a grade fee and a price increase of the software - something I have never done in 23 years.

Since I just recently purchased the program, I would be hard pressed to buy an upgrade already. When was the last upgrade? I have mentioned some things that I find the program lacking. I find it very useful. I just thinks some minor changes can really make it much better. Just my 2¢

As I said, you won’t EVER be charged for any upgrade from me. That’s why there aren’t a lot of upgrades, though.

I don’t think you’ve watched the Woodturner PRO tutorials that shows you how to select multiple rows (Ctrl-a selects all of the rows). You can then change the number of segments for all selected rows in a single command. Here is the link:

Also, make sure you watch the Keyboard Shortcuts in the right column. It shows you things like selecting all rows. The contents of that window changes based on the type of row you are on.

With regards to setting the number of segments default, it doesn’t matter what the default is. If you want to build a bowl with 18 segments, build it with 18 segments and if you forget, select all rows and change it to 18 segments. This will take you 5 seconds.

Yes I do know how to do the operations that you mentioned. I am not trying my be difficult here. I am just offering some input. I use the programs regularly and am quite happy with the results. I was just offering my observations. Sorry if it came off as something else.

I have been using WTP for over 12 years. I do not find the default of 12 segments to be an issue. Like any software it has its pluses and minuses. What one may believe would be an improvement another may not.

Bottom line. WTP or SP beats the heck out of the graph paper planning option. lol

I didn't take your reply as trying to be difficult and I also don't believe my reply to you implied that. The thing is that there are no simple changes to software. Adding a default for the number of segments means it also needs to be done for the thickness, the species, etc. This means that any video tutorial that shows the Options window would need to be redone because whenever the tutorial doesn't match the current version, I get all sorts of calls asking why they are different.

When Woodturner PRO first came out in 2000, I tried to be responsive to everyone add every feature request to the software and it wasn't long before the software became bloated to the point that it was hard to learn and hard to maintain and impossible to document properly. Most of the additions were used once or twice and never used again. In 2012. I made a major release to Version 3 and took that as an opportunity to eliminate all of the software that added no functionality.

I also became comfortable with the understanding that the software isn't going to do everything that customers want it to do, but it has to do everything that customers need it to do. There is not one piece of software that works the way that I think it should work but in every case, I've learned to adapt to it. I'm not saying that your input isn't appreciated, but it clearly falls in the want category, not the need category.

I'm currently working on Segment PRO and have a release coming out in the next couple months that will add a lot of functionality changes. I will paid exactly zero dollars for all of the work I'm putting into it. Everyone will get it for free. It simply makes me feel good that I'm adding functionality as I see an opportunity.

Woodturner PRO is currently locked. It has been on the market for 23 years and I hope that it is there for 23 more years. It does everything it needs to do and I see no reason to make any changes to it other than bug fixes. I'm the only employee of the company and I'm retired. I'm a self-taught programmer who has never had a computer class in my life and programming is not something I enjoy when compared to retirement activities.

So please don't take my lack of action to your input personally because it isn't. But unless something in Woodturner PRO is broken, it won't be on the todo list. I'm fully aware that the software has warts but it is still the most powerful piece of software ever written for segmenters.

I am not taking it personally Lloyd. I have a thicker skin than that. As a relatively new user I just thought that I would share some observations. I will go quietly back to where I was and not bother you or Mike again. Thank you.

Your posts have not been a bother. We all learn by sharing our experiences with the software.

I would hope you would continue to participate.
