These two programs, Woodturner PRO and Segment PRO were written 17 years apart. In 2000, c++ and xml were the technologies of choice. In 2017, I chose the leading technologies of c# and json as the libraries to support them are far better tan what was available in 2000. I saw no need to make the files interchangeable because the programs were written to accomplish completely different things.
The bottom line is this - Segment PRO was written to be a fast and easy way to design a bowl where the software does all of the work for you. For it to do this, though, I had to limit the capabilities and so I built the software to make any ‘standard’ segmented bowl. About 75% of every segmented bowl you ever see is a standard segmented bowl so it is not very limiting.
If you want or need to make something that is non-standard (staves, compound segments, varying details between rows, etc), you MUST use Woodturner PRO. In Woodturner PRO, you are in complete control all of the time. You start in 3D Design Pro where you design both the outside and the inside wall profiles. By doing this if you want more wall profile in a certain area, you simply modify the dot positions go give you that extra room. Once you are in Woodturner PRO, you do all of the work. If you want to add a row, you add it and set the properties for that for. For the next row, your are free to do whatever you want to that row. This means that there is no intelligence in Woodturner PRO. You are in complete control.
Woodturner PRO is the most powerful piece of segmenting software ever written but because it is not computer assisted, it is not as fast, nor can you take advantage of the artificial intelligence built into Segment PRO.
This means you have to make a decision when you start a project. If it can be standard, use Segment PRO and finish your design in far less time than it would take in Woodturner PRO. If you want to do anything that is non-standard, than Woodturner PRO is the program you must use.
There simply isn’t anything to gain by moving a program from Segment PRO to Woodturner PRO. You won’t have a profile that has an inside and an outside wall profile and without that, you cannot use the Profile-SNAP functionality of Woodturner PRO and without that, you will have to manually adjust all of the diameters of each row.
In my opinion, once you spend time with Woodturner PRO, you will see that if you’re going to create a non-standard bowl that you can’t create in Segment PRO, it will be far faster to build it start-to-finish in Woodturner PRO because it was made to do just that.
