These are some of the rolling pins I made for Christmas presents this year. The French Rolling Pin (far left) has a single Celtic knot and the rest with free rolling handles have a double knot. I've got six more French pins ready for turning tomorrow. Each of the two models have their own dedicated sled. I first modeled the pins in SketchUp to determine what angle would achieve the look I was after and how to build the sleds.
These are fun to do and lend themselves well to production work. I've found that making about five at a time works well. For the knots, I picked angles that would let me use 1/8" wood in 6" and 12" lengths as there are a couple people on eBay that sell thin wood in a variety of species in multiples of 12" so there is practically no waste. The price is so reasonable that I don't think I could resaw them myself and save any money.
