Chatter/vibration turning bowl lip

I’m not sure if this is the best place for a general turning question but here goes… my current project is a 60 segment per ring bowl and as I’m getting to ring 30, I’m starting to get some chatter when I turn the bowl. I’ve tried both bowl gouges and carbide, but when I’m working the lip of the bowl I’m getting some chatter. I sharpened my gouged, and am wondering if I need some kind of support such as a small jamb chuck on the inside of the bowl to help stabilize everything. At this point the bowl is six in deep and 10.5 in in diameter with a wall thickness of .275. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You may want to look into a steady rest.

A jam chuck may also help.
take light cuts, may want to slow the speed down.

Like Mike said, a steady rest would be my recommendation. That's a beautiful bowl and it looks like the alignment is spot on!

Thanks gentlemen. Steady rest helped quite a bit as most of the chatter happened when turning the bowl interior. I still had to do a bit more scraping on the interior than i’d have liked but the bowl cleaned up well. I’m still struggling to get comfortable using bowl gouges on the interior. It just feels like the tool is controlling me instead of me controlling the tool. I went to a 55° grind on my main gouge and that definitely helped. I’ll post a finished picture when everything's done.

I recently bought a CNC cut steady rest off of Etsy. Works great and a lot less expensive than the ones mentioned in earlier posts.

It sounds like you are hollowing as you build the bowl, which is not the best approach. Keeping more mass/material at the bottom of the bowl reduces chatter at the rim. Next time, try completing your glue-up before you start on the interior.
