Sanding small diameter rings

My surface sander needs a 6" diameter ring to reach across infeed to outfeed rolls. I would like your ideas on sanding small rings.

I make a carrier board with a back stop and side rail I use double sided tape to tack the rings down to the carrier board. The carrier board needs to be large enough to meet your sanders specs. 12 wide by 12 long?
 
Another method is you can flatten the bottom side of the ring (disk, belt, sanding block) it can be glued onto your vessel. Then on the lathe flatten the top side of the ring.
 
I wasn't sure tape would hold, I'll try tape.
On the lathe would I use a tool or sanding board?
With either method is .010/.015 " oversize enough to work with?
Is the side rail on the backing board to compensate for side movement caused by the helix on the sander drum roll, no pun intended.;)
 
- I have found tape to hold. You just have to do light passes (sanding). Drum sanders are not planers.
- As far as on the lathe. Depends on how much you need to flatten. Sometimes I just use a sanding board. Sometimes I use a carbide tool or bowl gouge doing a sheer cut.
- With a drum sander you mentioned 6 inches. I assumed the 6" is the distance between the rollers. The side rail should be made of wood. The reason for the side rail is to keep the carrier board from ever lifting up between the rollers. The side rail helps keep the carrier board down and gives the rollers something to press on. imo, it also helps reduce the chance of your small ring from being lifted up as it goes through the sander.
I have even put rails on both sides of the rings and also have a front and rear rail. Basically boxed in the rings on the carrier board.
