I have noticed on several gallery posts that the finish on the projects is mirror like in it's reflection. So my question is what are the favorite types of finish used and how are they applied? I know a good clean surface and smooth surface is needed, but I can get the finish I'm looking for. Thanks in advance to all who reply.

When I want a shiny finish, I do this:
    1. Sand through 320 grit.
    2. Brush on lacquer sanding sealer and dry overnight.
    3. Sand through 600 grit.
    4. Spray on two coats of lacquer, waiting an hour between coats.
    5. After drying at least several hours, smooth it off with #0000 steel wool.
    6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 four more times, for a total of 10 coats.
    7. After letting it dry for several days, buff with Bon Ami or Barkeepers Friend.

You end up with a finish like on the red piece to the left. It's a lot more work than slathering on some urethane but I think it looks better.
