• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Board and SEL accuracy how close is close enough

First of all my day job is a quality inspector in the aviation industry, so .770 means usually +/- .010.

This project is the one Lloyd used in the tutorial on how to use the paint function in Segment Pro

With this I am cutting my segments as close to the plan as possible usually within .005, this has not been a quick and easy process when you have a wood that moves as soon as you mill it. Spend a lot of time re-cutting.
My question is how close is close enough?

Little more history, This is my second attempt at making a segmented project. The first, at ring 14 I realized that I had turned the first 13 rings at to much of a angle, upper rings are to large in diameter, My process was to cut, glue and turn rings as I go.

Current project is to build all the rings and then run thru the drum sander so they are all the same thickness.

I use the wedgie sled with seg easy gauges and built a SEL gauge that was over kill but it is accurate, machinist calipers and telescoping gauges to set dimensions.

When cutting the board width is it possible to group cuts in a range as long as the widest is used for the final dimension and the sel is per plan?

Appreciate All the input I can get.
Sorry for the long post. As I typed this I had more questions.

Here is my take on "close enough".
- The board width is important as far as glue up of the stacked rings and the shape of your vessel. You need a board wide enough to ensure a good glue service between the rings. If the plans call for a 1" wide board it is better to have a strip wider than narrower.
** Another thought. See attached image. I still tend to overbuild. I add 1/8 to 1/4 inch to the diameter of each ring. I ensure the board is wide enough I can remove the extra material to get to the plan diameter.

As far as SEL. As you know if the SEL is larger than what the plans call for you will have a larger ring. If it is smaller, you have a smaller ring. Another reason why I tend to make the board a bit wider than needed.

In SP in the summary table you can click on the option to optimize board width or segment edge length. It does the grouping for you.

as far as the SEL being all within .005, imo you should be good. Your rings are coming out round are they not?

Yes my rings are round. I will go to the program and learn how to optimize, seen Lloyd do that in a tutorial.
I appreciate the input. Probably should have started a project with less segments, but I always seem to jump before crawling

Went to the program and dang with two clicks could have saved a lot of frustration and not to mention time.

Thanks for the tip.

Your welcome.
I tend to use both SP and WTP when designing a project. SP is great for "painting" a design. It is also great for how quickly a vessel can be created. WTP is great for more control on the ring height, width of segment, etc.

Enjoy learning and getting into segment turning.
