I am new to this and have designed a couple of simple Pet Urns. I like the cutaway view so I can see the segment layout. I am assuming that the volume total is based on the inside diameters listed on the left of the screen. If this is the case, is there a way to either input a finished wall thickness or to see a volume total based on finished wall thickness?

To understand how the volume is calculated, click on the toolbar button that has a green hash on it. This will indicate the area in which the wall will be turned. This hash mark looks at adjacent rows and identifies the part where the two rows overlap. The green hash identifies the trapezoid from the lower overlap to the upper overlap. Clicking the toolbar icon that looks like a glue bottle will show you how wide those overlaps are.

The volume is calculated by row and it is based on the average inside diameter of the row based on the lowest point of the inside hash mark and the highest point of that hash so it takes the slope of the wall profile into consideration.. It doesn’t matter whether profile is contracting or expanding. This average and the actual height of the ring provides the volume for that row. This volume is added to the value of all of the rows, ending at 1-1/2” from the top where the top cap is likely to be. In my opinion, the volume calculation is very accurate. In fact, it is far more accurate than the thumbnail estimate of one pound of human ashes equals one cubic inch of volume. That calculation can be off by 10-20%.

Thank you for the info.It makes a lot more sense now. When I pressed the glue bottle and got the measurements for the wall thickness, it is showing .5 and .63. Is there away to fine tune it to show 1/4” wall thickness? That is usually the wall thickness I shoot for.

Sorry about that but you answered my question for both programs. I am concentrating on Woodturner Pro right now. Can only put so much info into the ole’ gray matter at any one time. (Smile)

No problem. It just helps to know which. SP and WTP work differently.

WTP gives you pretty much full control of each ring. The Tutorials are good. Some are dated in that some options were dropped (like grid) in the current version.

While I use both WTP and SP. I do a lot more work in WTP. Ask any question you have. It is a way we all learn and keep sharp.
 
The wall width you specify in Segment PRO or the or the area that is the green hash area isn’t the finished wall width. It is the width you want to have before you start turning. You can turn it down to any width you like, but the important thing is to have enough wood to avoid the biggest error of all - not having enough wood in one place.

Woodturner PRO doesn’t do anything automatically - on purpose. You are completely in control which means if you want less wall width, you move a dot or two using the Move command in Woodturner PRO and then click Profile Snap again. Keep checking the glue bottle to make sure you’ve got what you want.

In Segment PRO, the software is in charge and you can set the wall width to whatever you want and the software will change the inside diameter to match what you enter. Remember, though, that the wall width you specify will only be correct in a place where the segments are vertical, like a column. In every other place, the amount you specify is increased based on the slope of the profile at every elevation.

Sometimes I forget the partnership with 3DDesign and WTP. Once a profile is designed in 3DDesign I tend to just make the changes in WTP by adjusting inside/outside diameter in the ring.
