• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

    SEL formula

I don't know what a cross slide, compound, or leadscrew is, I'm just curious about the trig and geometry of a wedge as it relates to the ring. I am not seeking any precision, I am just trying to understand the SP calculations for SEL and board length, not to question the software or use more...

    SEL formula

True, and as you increase the number of segments (chords), you approach the true aggregate circumference. I'd like to know, based on the number of sides how much should be allotted in the length of the board to cover that error. Then, when turned, that longer segment would result in the desired...

    SEL formula

In fact, I was in that thread and have a much better understanding of the SEL being used to set the stop block. I don't measure straight across now, I measure at the angle of the wedge to set the stop block. One way or the other, it really it has a minor effect on the total length of material...

    SEL formula

Yup, I ignored the saw kerf in my drawing but it is 1 less than the number of segments times the kerf width. I use 3/32" blades, so .09375. Absolutely on the safety factor, I arbitrarily add a couple inches even if I'm using a clamp to hold that last piece.

    SEL formula

Not that I didn't believe you Lloyd, but I am a visual guy, so I used a a product called Visio and drew up the attached. The reason for my digging into this is that I am building a spreadsheet which will answer the following question: If I have a stick of wood that is "x" inches long, how many...

    SEL formula

I get the 6 OD SEL + 6 ID SEL as you flip the board or use the second fence. I also get the 11 saw kerf addition. I couldn't get the Segment Pro software to give me a straight sided bowl with a 6" OD and a 6" ID so I couldn't see the base numbers for the hypothetical bowl in the Summary. A...

    SEL formula

Thanks, I totally get the Trig function change. Is WTP WoodTurnerPro? So SegmentPro automatically gives these width to the segments. If so, that's OK, I was just testing the SEL calculation. Yes on the board length, I would include some length for the kerf and finger protection when I get to...

    SEL formula

Given the notion that the number of segments divided into the circumference of a bowl gives you the Segment Edge Length, I'd like to understand why there's a difference in the SELs in Segment Pro vs a plain calculation. For example: for a 6" 12 segment bowl the formula would be (3.1416 * 6 ) /...

Having trouble with Southwest segment length

    I like the 0, 90, 180, 270 idea...I'll try that. Thanks

Having trouble with Southwest segment length

Actually, I do use a Segeasy style sled and have the wedgies for setups to make the rings. I think the sled is brilliant in it's compensating for table saw setup issues. Armed with the wedgies and the sled, my rings come out just perfect. The issue I am having is when stacking patterned rings...

    Summary has negative SELs?

I must have changed the number of segments but I don't recall, vaguely a possibility and more a probability. Also, on the board length: "So if you cut a board into 12 segments, the formula for the board length is 6 times the long SEL plus 6 times the short SEL plus 11 saw kerfs cut at 15...

    Summary has negative SELs?

I don't understand how the SELs are getting screwed up on this plan. With 36 segments a diameter of 9.4" should have SELs of about .82" yet all this plan shows is .322". And the board length is almost 32" which, with 36 segments, implies an SEL of under 1"? More bafflingly, the smaller...

Having trouble with Southwest segment length

Thanks, I had seen that clamp before I think a guy named Earl came up with it? I've wanted to make one for a while but am using band clamps now pretty successfully. My question was more about alignment. Once you have the ring completed which is part of a design spanning many rings, how do you...

Having trouble with Southwest segment length

I do have another question...Do you have a recommendation for how to glue a painted segment bowl that has no gaps? I am not ready to tackle a open segment bowl yet. I do know about the plates and the Stomper but that will have to come later. For now, I am impressed with myself in being able to...
