• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Summary has negative SELs?

I don't understand how the SELs are getting screwed up on this plan. With 36 segments a diameter of 9.4" should have SELs of about .82" yet all this plan shows is .322". And the board length is almost 32" which, with 36 segments, implies an SEL of under 1"? More bafflingly, the smaller diameters have negative SELs? What have I done wrong?

Your attached file is importing as a profile and not a plan.

Without the plan it is hard to determine what is going on.

In SP
Open your plan
Make sure you have selected bowl view
In Bowl setting click on saved plans
Go to Share / Export.
You should get a message like this. Note the location of the file. That is the file you need to attach.

What type of 36 segment bowl were you designing. (Painted, Featured or Tornado)?
Did the number of segments ever change during your design process before saving the plan?

The Board column gives the dimension of stock you would need to cut all 36 segments to make a ring regardless of species.
The Species Column gives you the number of segments for each species of wood in that ring. It also gives the length of the board you would need to get that number of segments.

Attached is the plan for the bowl represented in the summary table .

I make this guarantee - ALL of my calculations are 100% correct. The reason I know this is that whenever I make a change to any formula, I test my results against two other segment calculators just to make sure that I haven’t made an error.

One common mistake new users make regards the board length. It is logical to think that if the SEL is 1”, for example, and you need 12 segments, you have to have a board that is 12” plus saw kerfs but that is not correct. If you are using a wedgie sled with two fences or a single-fence sled, be aware that you are cutting a segment that is a trapezoid that has two Segment Edge Lengths - a long one that forms the outside diameter and the short SEL that makes the inside diameter. When you cut a board into segments, the first one you cut will have one long SEL cut from one side of the board and it is followed by one with the short SEL cut from the same side of the board. So if you cut a board into 12 segments, the formula for the board length is 6 times the long SEL plus 6 times the short SEL plus 11 saw kerfs cut at 15 degrees.

I don’t add anything to the board length for clamping and safety. I simply show you the absolute minimum length a board must be to yield the number of segments you have specified. It is up to you to know how much wood you want to add for clamping and safety.

The good thing to know about this is that if the software says that your outside diameter is calculated to be 9.5”, for example - if yours isn’t 9.5” it means that one or more of your segments did not get cut at the correct SEL. The formula for calculating SEL is simple and is widely known.

I am more than glad to use zoom video to share your screen. If you would like to do so, please install zoom and then call me at the phone number listed at the bottom of every page of the main website.

If you ever get a negative number, it is a side affect of painting a vessel and then changing the number of segments. If you do this, you must reset the segments and repaint. Once you do this, the Summary page will be correct again.

I have already changed the software so that the next release will allow you to change the number of segments and the Summary will stay correct. However, if you then increase the number of segments back to what it was, you will have default segments where painted segments were before. I’m still working on other more difficult enhancements to Segment PRO and I can post the upgrade until everything is finished. I am now working on those things, though, so it shouldn‘t be too long.

I must have changed the number of segments but I don't recall, vaguely a possibility and more a probability. Also, on the board length: "So if you cut a board into 12 segments, the formula for the board length is 6 times the long SEL plus 6 times the short SEL plus 11 saw kerfs cut at 15 degrees." I totally missed that...I was just multiplying my SEL by the number of segments which is obviously as you state properly is incorrect. Thanks for info; I will re-paint my bowl fresh and see what I get. I'll let you know, but you already know...
