Tornado Globe Part 2 - Cutting Segments using a Miter Saw

In Part 2, we'll build a zero-clearance sled that will allow us to cut segments safely and quickly. The open segment globe will have 180 segments total and using a technique where a stop can be added and removed very quickly.

Towards the end of this video, you'll get a preview of a vacuum based separator, that picks up segments as they are cut and deposits them in a container. You won't actually see the device yet as I'm still working on it. It works great, though, and dramatically speeds the process.

Once again, your feedback and discussions on this topic will be appreciated.

Nice tutorial Lloyd, am I just missing it or is there no a video showing cutting the project using a tablesaw?

It's still coming. My consulting business has me very tied up right now but it should start letting up next month. I project manage tenant improvement projects and my current one has all the balls up in the air. Fortunately, I'm getting to do a lot of woodworking for this project so I'm spending a lot of time in the shop, just not making tutorials as I'd like to do. I'll see if I can work it in, though. I have a lot of good ideas for the table saw tutorial.

Could you give the name and supplier of the miter saw "board stop" you used in this video. Did not catch the name. The way it rotates out of the way would be so useful. Also thanks for making these videos, new to segmented turning and the learning process is so much fun and easier with these videos.

That product is made by Incra and is called the Flip Stop. I was surprised, though, to see that it isn't sold separately in the United States. However, you can usually find the Flip Stop for sale at eBay and, in fact, there are a couple for sale there today.

An option is to make your own using a simple hinge and plastic or wood. I will soon be making a video showing a table saw sled for cutting segments for the SegEasy plates and for it I will be using a home made flip stop. I won't be able to do the tutorial until January, but I think you will find it to be a great way to safely cut three or four segments at a time.

Lloyd,
I just followed your example through on the tornado globe. It all looked like it worked out fine when I built my plan in Woodturner Pro. Then I watched the tutorial video again and noticed your plan shows 16 segments?(A,B1,B2 and C shows 32 segments? This confuses me, seems to me there should be 18 segments?
Thanks,
Brad

Brad,

That number shows how many segments of each species is required of that width and segment edge length. I had sized the globe so that multiple rows would have the same geometry. In doing this, I was able to limit the number of widths to three. Doing this really saves time and makes the cutting of segments go so much faster. It often results in a little more wood needing to be removed at the lathe, but that goes very quickly.

Lloyd,
I'm interested in how you cut the segments for the tornado globe? Table saw? If so do you use the Dubby? Would like to know exactly how you manage it if you do?
Brad

Brad,

I use a sled I made for my table saw that is dedicated to cutting segments for the SegEasy plates. It has a homemade flip-stop like the one I have for the miter saw and buries the sawblade after the cut. It has three stops - one at zero so that it can be used to crosscut small pieces using the flip-stop, one at 5.5 degrees for the 24-segment plate and the final stop at 8 degrees for the 18-segment plate.

Good and bad news, though - I'm making a video tutorial on making this sled, but it won't be done until I return from the Segmented Woodturner's Symposium that is next week. I have a space in the vendor area so I'm going to be tied up getting ready for it.

The best news is that this sled is really easy to build and it lets you cut three or four segments at at time with your fingers never near the blade and with the segments falling away from the blade.

I'm also going to use the sled to cut the segments for an open-segment Christmas ornament that is fun and easy to make.

Thanks Lloyd,
I had planned on going to San Antonio, but my wife and I had a conflict we couldn't resolve. Maybe next year. Thanks for your response which reinforces what I thought. After trying to cut the small segments for the ornament using my dubby, I thought it might be wise to make a dedicated sled for the small open segment projects. I may modify my already modified incra sled to accommodate this type of project. Looking forward to seeing your design after you return. Have fun (they have lots of good Mexican food in SA)
I spent the better part of 5 years traveling the state of Texas. Spent considerable time in SA.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Lloyd.....did you ever post anything further on your vacuum based separater?
