I've been a Woodturner for 5 years turning a variety of bowls and ornaments. Now looking for a more challenging experience. I'm sure I will be looking for help as I proceed.
It is a very common practice. I buy 3/4 to 1" thick stock and rip to approximate thickness, sand / plane to final thickness.I'm wondering if people are using lets say 3/4" exotic wood or any other species and milling it themselves to thinner stock. I have pieces of wood that are 12" or less and would like to use it up, but am I asking for trouble.
Trying to save wood and being able to have multiple of same thing parts, i use my bandsaw and re-saw as much as i can to get thinner stock. It is a very common practice. I buy 3/4 to 1" thick stock and rip to approximate thickness, sand / plane to final thickness.
I mill up scraps all the time for projects.
The key is plan your project. WoodTurnerPro or SegmentPro will produce a cutlist for you for each ring. Both sofware will estimate the amount of material you need for each ring.
If you have a bandsaw take a look at Accu-slice Title: Accu-Slice Band Saw Accessories, is a bit priceI was going to buy the Mitre Set, but found out it only goes up too 20 Segments. It now looks like I have to make a Seg-easy Sled and afraid by making it ii is only as accurate as you can make it. Then I need to buy the Wegies and they come in open and closed apparently. Do I need both or get by with one? Just hope by making it it will be accurate or will I have other issues. Need some direction
