• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

New to Segmented Turning Help!!!!

I've been a Woodturner for 5 years turning a variety of bowls and ornaments. Now looking for a more challenging experience. I'm sure I will be looking for help as I proceed.

Hi Jeff:
Ask away. There are some very good turners here to help out.
Not sure what you want to build to be more "challenging"? Lloyd's software makes the planning process easier.

Thank you, I'm sure I will be asking lots of questions. There is a lot more to Segmented Turning than just Natural edge bowls I am used too.

Jeff:
There is a lot of us who have gone to the Seg-Easy sled and method for cutting segments. The sled is easy to make.

If you are not familiar with Lloyd's software it is worth the time to look over the training videos.
Start with a simple bowl and build your skills from there.

Like you I started out doing solid turnings. Now I do mostly segment turning.

I'm wondering if people are using lets say 3/4" exotic wood or any other species and milling it themselves to thinner stock. I have pieces of wood that are 12" or less and would like to use it up, but am I asking for trouble.

It is a very common practice. I buy 3/4 to 1" thick stock and rip to approximate thickness, sand / plane to final thickness.
I mill up scraps all the time for projects.

The key is plan your project. WoodTurnerPro or SegmentPro will produce a cutlist for you for each ring. Both sofware will estimate the amount of material you need for each ring.

Thank you for getting back to me. I have Segmented Pro and will work on planning my turnings accordingly. Thanks again for the help.

I was going to buy the Mitre Set, but found out it only goes up too 20 Segments. It now looks like I have to make a Seg-easy Sled and afraid by making it ii is only as accurate as you can make it. Then I need to buy the Wegies and they come in open and closed apparently. Do I need both or get by with one? Just hope by making it it will be accurate or will I have other issues. Need some direction

If you have not looked at the SegEasy site here is a link

Closed vs Open segments is just a matter of miter angles. It does take a different set depending if you are making an open or closed ring.
I was fortunate enough to to have access to a CNC machine to make my own wedgies.

Some in my club have used digital protractors with the wedgie sled to set the miter angles with good success. I found it to be ok for 36 segments per ring.

When you dry fit your rings and if they have gaps you can make adjustments to the sled. If ring does not have much of a pattern but has a gap, you can build the ring in two halves. Then using a disc sander square up the ends of the two halves for a perfect fit.

Before going to the segeasy sled I have used a incra miter express cross cut sled along with a one degree miter gauge. It has worked well for years.

The miter express has t channels in which a second fence can be added like the segeasy sled.

Trying to save wood and being able to have multiple of same thing parts, i use my bandsaw and re-saw as much as i can to get thinner stock.
I have been getting cutoffs from a local cabinet shop for some time to make toys, and pens and I'm planning on using them for the segments also.
Like Jeff I'm just getting started in segment building and turning.
RIght now I'm working on learning how to best use the software and designing projects.

If you have a bandsaw take a look at Accu-slice Title: Accu-Slice Band Saw Accessories, is a bit price
I have the re-saw system and it works great and have just gotten the Accu-Wedge carriage ( had to save a while for this) and trying to work WTP and SP with this.

I have Segmented Pro and have been designing and saving the bowls as I go. Today I was printing a summary and everytime I do it freezes up the computer. I have a Surface Pro and am confused on what to do. I don't know if I need to reinstall the progam, but wouldn't be sure of the process. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I am guessing your Surface Pro is running Windows 10 or maybe 11.
From your comment I am guessing SP is operating fine for design and saving of the plans.

The printing issue of the summary may be your printer drivers and not a SP software issue.
Does SP freeze up when trying to print any plan you have saved?

Another question is did you paint a design and then changed the number of segments? It messes up the summary database index, which can cause some problems. Only way to resolved is start over. The key is if you are painting a design. Do Not change the number of segments.

- one work around is to export the summary as a Excel spreadsheet. Use Excel or other spreadsheet program to print.

You may want to do a Share export of the plan that is causing the freeze and then attach the json file to a post.
That way we can see if it prints out on other pcs.

I would not delete the program at this time.
