rotating rings

I wonder how I rotate rings in woodturner pro. I work on a segmented bowl with a brick pattern, and the rings are all lined up. It looks like bricks stacked on top of each other, not offset by a fraction of a segment. how do I rotate the rings ? is there a key combination or a value in can enter ?
Does someone know how I rotate rings ? Best Reto

It is pretty much a standard in segment construction to use the so called "brick pattern". WTP uses that standard in the construction of the vessel.
Short answer, I know of no way to rotate a ring a fraction. Segments will align in the center of the connecting ring.

If you want two rings to align (match) each other, you can insert a ring in the middle with 0 (zero) height. The first and third ring will align with each other.

I just uploaded a screenshot. The rings don't align in the center of the connecting ring. I am not sure what I did to get the rings lining up. I think the only way to figure out is ... I have to start over. Thanks for your feedback !

It is helpful if you post the actual wtp file or json file. That way we can look at the file you are working on. Good luck.

I just uploaded the wtp file, any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

- Not sure what you want to accomplish with rotating the rings.
What type of pattern are you wanting to create?

I noticed your build has veneer ring of 4 segments between each ash rings.

While it won't show in WTP view you can build your jar as designed. Just do the offset you want as you glue the rings up.

The reason for the 4 veeneer segements ... it is more economical to cut the veenr from the sheets and glue them on top of the ash segments. On the lathe I cut off the veneer that is not used.

Regarding the segments ... the ash segments should be offset, so that the offset is centered and it looks like a brickwall. I just uploaded a pic from the web ... the segments are offset.

I could imagine that my approach in WTP is wrong: I start with the ash ring, than add a veneer ring, add another ash ring. Because of the number of 4 veneer segments and than 16 ash segments I end up with stacking segments on top of each other rather than getting an offset.

I guess I should do first all ash rings, and than add the veneer rings between. Does that make sense ?

Thanks for the posts.
Here is a redone WTP file which now has the brick pattern with your veneer and spacers. I just added some zero thickness rings above the veneer.

Thank you ! this solved the problem. I guess the other approach would be 8 veneer segment, half of the 16 ash segments. Best Reto

In a perfect world, there would be a field that allows you to change the rotation, row-by-row. That would actually add a LOT of user interface, though, and the cost would be prohibitive for reasons I don’t choose to share.

Since the only rotation you’d want to do other than 50% of the prior row is 0% of the prior row and because you can accomplish this by adding a row of zero height, that functionality isn’t something I will do. So I admit this isn’t a great solution, but it will have to do.

Lloyd,
Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. I am able to get the brick pattern, adding a zeor-height row. Thanks for your support and getting back to me about the functionality of the software. Your software is a great help to visualize my projects, the rest is imagination, not perfection :)
Best, Reto
