• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

I am relatively new to segmented turning, this being my third year at it, and I've only made nine sculptures. All of my projects have been designed by hand, which has been a very tedious process, with lots of guessing going on. I've purchased one segmented turning planner and have had very little luck learning that program, and their help is almost non-existent. The AAW Segmented Turners forum has highly recommended Segment Pro, and has promised there is live support for help readily available, so I'm going to give it s shot.

Welcome to WTP forum.
I have found Lloyd's software to be easy to learn and use. Lloyd is very good at providing support.
Some things to think about
WoodTurnerPro is the oldest software but it gives you full control of each ring.
Segment Pro is the newest and is rules based. Therefore you are limited to how much control you have over the rings.

I use both WTP and SP, though I will admit WTP is my go to program.

The software can be downloaded and used for 30 days for free.

Thank you for the endorsement. I was just reading about the WTP and was wondering if it did indeed give one more control. I was hoping to design my Segmented #10 using the trial of SP, but was NOT finding it user friendly. I wanted to insert a couple accent rings, and couldn't find a way to do it. And I couldn't find a way to specify the top ring size, as I want it to hold a flower vase insert. It's certainly simple enough if you just want to use a standard pre-planned shape, but is a pain to try to customize things. I'll now start a trial of WTP and see how that works without tutoring.

WTP is used in conjunction with 3DDesign (free). 3DDesign is used to create the profile.
Because of different database structure one cannot import a WTP or SP project into each other.

WTP if you click on the ring below (blue box showing the ring is selected) where you want the accent ring just click on add new ring. Then change the specs for that ring.

One thing I have done quite a bit since SP has a great number of good profiles is to select the profile and bowl settings. Then using the summary sheet you can quickly build it in WTP by using the outside and inside diameter.

Watch the tutorials. They are very helpful.

I have watched all the WTP tutorials I can find, and yes, they are very helpful. I will definitely be purchasing WTP, but not so sure about SP or the Lamination software. Unless you convince me that I need them (<;

One thing I can see the need for, but can't find it in any of the "help" sections, is this: Is there a way to rotate a ring's placement, e.g., the profile view seems to always portray a pure brick-lay pattern, but I can see the need to be able to use a different pattern than that. It would be nice to see that in the rendering of the project, but the only "rotation" function I can find is for the entire piece. If such a ring rotation function doesn't exist, I guess I'll just have to use my imagination. HA!

Also, is there no place to put in a desired wall thickness? I have been targeting a 1/2" thick wall for my manual designing. Watching Lloyd's tutorial about designing the shape, looks like the only way to do that is by manual adjustments to the profile. I see that SP does have a "wall thickness" entry box. Perhaps making a manual entry in the "Row Details" information for the "Inside Diameter," that is 1/2" less that the Outside Diameter would work?

Lamination Pro is a great program for doing designs based on laminating a board up and making multigeneration cuts.
I use WTP and then SP the most. SP has a great paint feature for doing designs.

The brick pattern in the standard in segmenting. There is no way in either program to rotate a ring a specific degree. That said,if you wanted to eliminate the brick pattern in WTP so two rings match up exactly, you can insert a middle ring and make the thickness 0. Visually you will not see the ring and ring 1 and 3 will line up.

In WTP by adjusting the Inside and/or outside diameter of the ring will change the wall thickness in the Calculation box. (Board Width)

I always tend to overbuild. If I want a 6 inch ring I build a 6 1/8 to 6 1/4 ring with a width of 3/4 to 1". I will turn down to the exact specs I want.

SP being rules based does limit what you can do in customizing. For what you want to do WTP is the way to go.
Because of different database structure designs in WTP or SP cannot be directly imported to each other.

I have found some of the preloaded profiles in SP to be what I want. I will set the height of the vessel and use the summary sheet as a quick guide to build the vessel in WTP. The summary sheet from SP gives the Outside and Inside Diameter. From there in WTP I can tweek the ring thickness, add accents, change number of segments in a ring. etc.

once you get the hand of it it takes no time to build a vessel.

Ah ha! I was thinking the same thing regarding your "dummy ring" idea, but not realizing I could make it invisible by using 0".

I agree with you entirely regarding the "overbuild dimensions." But in my case, not using a computer to help me design my projects, I just needed the padding to make sure I could pull off the designs. My first project (designed by hand and absolutely no idea of what I was doing) resulted in rings that were turned all the way through that had to be replaced, or were an inch thick, making the interior unsightly (luckily it was a vase with a metal insert).

I'm starting to get itchy, thinking about designing a new vase project with WTP. I have a giant oak burl that I'm going to use for the majority of it, and am excited about using it to help me design/locate accent rings, as well as a simplified feature ring or two.

I understand the uses of SP and LP, so I will try to test their applications for my work before the trial period is over. I do like certain automated features of SP, but am thinking they won't be necessary if I truly master WTP.

LP looks interesting, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around what I'm seeing past gen 1. And I really don't see how these later generation boards are cut into segments. I'm going to be gone for a week without any time to work on this, but when I get back, I'll attack the tutorials on it. Hopefully the answers to my questions will be there.

Just start a thread in the forums section specific to the software and you will get some responses.
