I understand the formula for SEL used in WTP & SP. The larger the number of segments the smaller difference between that and using the tangent. I bought my first lathe 3 months ago, so I am completely new to this and turning in general. There is much for me to learn. I guess the engineer in me can't resist precision. However, I do understand what you mean regarding "false" accuracy. I am a long way from being able to remove the minimum of material to reach perfectly round. I am OK with my approach for now since it gives me an easy way to setup the Segeasy sled. I don't care too much if 6" doesn't turn out to be exactly 6" since I only have myself to please. I could even use the SEL from WTP or SP and multiply by the cos value to derive the setup blocks. I am going to see what difference that makes. I just finished turning my first very modest bowl. Baby steps! Thanks for all of your input.
Happy New Year. Let's hope that it is much better than 2020.
