This is a multigenerational platter I built in2005. It is made from Queensland maple (flindersia breyleyana) a highly sought local cabinet timber. I have been told on a few occasions that this format is not good and is liable to fail. This platter is still in my posession and as you can see it is nine years old and hasn't yet failed. It does not have a floating centre piece as advocated by some people and again it has not failed.
Criticisms and comments and questions are most welcome.

That's a wonderful platter and it looks like you just finished it yesterday. I can see why Queensland Maple is in such high demand.
I also have a number of pieces including platter-style designs and none of them have failed. I believe that part of the reason for this is that the wood has been sliced so many times that the fibers (the straws is probably a better description) are only millimeters long and because of this, there is littler or no expansion or shrinkage taking place.
The secret is to make sure that there is adequate glue coverage during assembly.
