Open Segment Project - Maze

Well the last project finished successfully, so now it's time to push the boundaries further. Last bowl was 60 segments so what the hell lets try 96 this time.

First a couple of upgrades to the glue up jig. The vertical lock on the jig was a little sticky so we fixed that. The we rearranged the setup on the horizontal axis to make it more user (that,s me) friendly. The biggie is a positive zero lock. Since my index plate is computerized, I can really put it anywhere and it will come back to it. But taking it on and off to put it on the lathe, sometimes it would get moved so then it was a matter of re-indexing. So I made a locking point on my faceplate and a locking point on the fixture.

Now that is done it's on to design.

Thought about a painted open segment with a feature ring. Got one designed, did the feature ring in storyboard but you cannot do painted segments yet in storyboard, so I did the same bowl in paint and just put brown rows where the feature ring is to go. Kind of recycled the pattern from the last bowl.
Ended up with this:
unnamed.jpg and this unnamed-1.jpg

was leary of the segments for the feature ring they had a S.E.L. of only 0.66".
So we scrap this for now.

Then using the same bowl profile I started a new design. Really got tighied up in this design, until I looked in the lower left corner of Segment PRO.
8832 segments WHAT!!!!

Nope not going to do that.

Next design like the one above so lets scale it back. Change the profile and shorten the bowl. Liked the profile of my last bowl so lets put it on that.

I really like that but it still a lot of segments, 7104!
But I really like it so what the hell.
So we are going to call this one Maze.
Now I need to figure out the wood I need to get and start mill it.

Once I get past the first three or four rows where I know this is not going to be a bust I'll move this over to the Follow Along Projects

Went and got my wood today. Yesterday I sawed up what I had so I could limit my costs. With a few extra purchases it was approaching $300.00, but that should keep me out of trouble for a while. Hoping to have this well under way, I have a presentation to to do for the Northeastern Wisconsin Woodworkers Guild on opens segment turnings in June.

What was your woods of choice for your project?

With the computer setup do you need to reset it to zero each time you start up? I assume with your modification above you lock it in place and then set that as your starting point????

Yes with the locking point when I engage the motor I just need to make sure that the index wheel on the screen is at zero

Today I got the wood milled for the first seven rows. These are where the board width is the widest.

Now once I get things cleaned up a little we'll see how cutting 96 segment rows goes.

Installed new blade in the table saw today a thin kerf 90T Diablo Ultra Flawless Finish Crosscut blade. Got it on the recommendation of Glenn McCarron. Had to redo my zero clearance and shim out my wedgie sled. Got that done so we'll see if we cut those little segments better. This blade is going to be dedicated to only cutting segments.

That's looking really good! Lots of colour. Glad you like the blade. I am trying to keep mine for cross cutting segments only as well.

Row four
Here are my typical steps for a row:
Set Row OD
4-1.jpg
Double check you at zero
4-2.jpg
Index to proper location
4-3.jpg
De-fuss the segment, make sure there are no loose fibers of dust
4-4.jpg
Apply the glue...segment length is up to 0.127"
4-5.jpg
Glue it down
4-6.jpg
Index to next position
4-7.jpg not much excess room fore the next piece 4-8.jpg
Glue it in
4-9.jpg ....4-10.jpg

Repeat 93 times
