• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. Mixed segment row

Hello all,

I've been using and teaching others to use WoodturnerPro for quite some time now and have come across a question that I cannot answer.

Please see attached. Referring to row 9, looking to have the ring consist of 12 Walnut segments not 6 and only 6 (3/4") Alder 'spacers'. The layout would be WWAWWAWWAWWA.

I've tried as a Wheel as well as Flat with vertical spacers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi mcjayjay
I have attached a rework of your wtp file Fall 2020-13. I did away with the wheel type rings. All are flat. The center of the SW pattern is a 6 segment ring with .75" alder spacers. All other rings are 12 segments.

Is that the pattern that you were looking for?

(ps, I live in Sun City West).

Thanks for a quick reply. What was row 9 is now row 8 but still has 6 segments. I was trying to do it with 12 segments & 6 'spacers'.

Perhaps what I'm trying to do is not possible with WTP.

It may not be possible with WTP or SP. WTP aligns rings through the brick type pattern. That is why I thought you were more interested in the featured ring pattern than sticking to the set segments numbers.

I made a guess the pattern was more important than the number of segments.
Another approach would be to glue a laminate board, cut to thickness and then miter the ends after marking from center segment edge length.

Don't have a vid tour, but the SWC woodshop website is Sun City West Woodshop – Woodworking for life (scwwoodshop.com)

I'm trying to create a vessel where each ring has a vertical spacer, alternating between wlanit4/maple then maple/walnut, essentially every other row is the same pattern.

However, when I change an odd row the even rows go out of kilter, then when I change the even row the odd rows go out of kilter. I tried an old trick using blank rows to try and break the sequence, to no avail. The data is correct but the graphic isn't.

Going to update my reply on your original post 1. Here is a different way to get to your sw pattern. The featured rings are 18 segments while everything else is 12 segments per ring.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Give me a while to take a look at your 612 modified.

It looks like for your 612 project you will just have to remember to put maple spacers with the walnut ring and walnut spacers with the maple rings.

WTP applies the selected species for spacers to all spacers.

Thanks for the updated WTP file and for the attempt on this one. It's rare I ask for help and appreciate any given. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

You are welcome. The forum is a good way for us to help each other out and learn.

I learned something about spacers. When I have inserted them, they have always been the same species. When I looked at the ring view it showed a spacer added to one side. Makes sense for the software in calculating SEL with spacers added.
