• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

New Summary View - Beta

Let's see what you think about this Summary View which shows you the board length for each of the species used in a Painted Segment row.

A few of the changes:
  • The grid now includes only those species that are used.
  • The segment count is now displayed on a cyan background.
  • The columns are displayed with a sum total in the footer.
  • I added a beige background to alternating rows.

Feedback requested.

Since this is beta, the only place you can download it is here:

Since the Length column of the different species is misleading because it reflects boards of different widths, I will come up with another way to look at this quantity and it will most likely be surface measure square inches. That will have to wait for a bit as I will be travelling next week.

Lloyd, I looked at the new summary page for Tom's Elephant bowl and it only shows the Maple and the wenge and not all the other species.

I also looked at the plan for my last Flower type bowl and it does show all the species but for my third wood (Tulip wood) there is no length's.

I printed a summary from a bowl previously designed.
The print preview page, thus what's printed, is different from the summary view which only shows the species used. The print preview shows all species and therefore doesn't fit on one sheet.
The print preview doesn't show the summary totals at the bottom of the columns, so doesn't print. This never has and is important.
The total length required in each ring shown on the new version is about 20% less than the total length required on the old version.
I'm not sure showing the total wood required in surface sq. inches would be helpful.
I like the concept and coloring if the above issues can be corrected.

I have the same remarks that Art has. Like the concept if what you see is what is printed. I agree that the total at the bottom does not mean much the way it is setup. I am thinking that I might do things different than others but I group widths together, for example 0.75" for many rows. Depending on the profile but for a basic bowl I will only cut 0.75" and 1" widths. That make it simple with counting total length. Thanks for taking this on.

I found a typo that causes the third species to not show lengths. None of my test files used the 3rd species. :-O
Actually, I'm quite pleased that I had only one typo. :->

I did not make it clear that I had only worked on the display grid. Unfortunately, the display grid is completely different from the grid that is to be printed and, unfortunately, some of the things you can do for the display version can't be done in the print version. For example, I have not found a way yet to delete the columns where the segment count is zero. Also, I haven't got the totals printing yet. I'm working on it, though.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just build the display grid and then print it?
That would be too easy. :-<

Here's a new build that corrects the display version. I've now opened all of Tom's plans and they all look correct to me.

Lloyd, I see that when you print out the summary page the lengths and the count are printing, as we know it does not fit on one page now. Maybe it would be easier to read if you kept the counts as they were and moved the lengths to the right similar to what I have on my sheet. That way you can read the counts on one page and the lengths on the second page. It would be best if they fit on one page but if that cannot happen then doing it like I suggest might be the best work around. Thank for your help.

I'm getting the same thing and I can't see anything wrong with the file. It prints the Ring View just fine and the Painted Segments process has to be correct because the bowl is painting correctly.

My guess is that this file was originally saved under a much older build and some piece of information was not stored with it. Finding it may prove to be very difficult.

Since we're all in this together, here is the current situation...

The Grid tools I am using (Telerik, by the way), are the most widely used, not to mention the most expensive and so there isn't any place else that I can (or would) turn. They have this superfantastic GridView control which is what is used for the Summary. The same grid is used for viewing and printing. But the implementation for viewing and printing is wildly different. For example, I can hide columns while viewing as you can see, but they are always there when printing. Next the column widths of the view and print do not change.

This means that the print version is going to have every column and to get it to fit on a single page becomes the issue. Next, the totals appear on the grid when viewed, but not on the printed grid, although I may be able to find a way around this.

But here is what I have done to see if there's a workable solution. I have switched to a narrower font that has allowed me to increase not only its size, but its readability. This has let me get all the columns on a single page unless you use more than about six species at which time it will spill over to a second page.

I can move all of the Lengths together and move them to the end of the grid but it seems that would be harder to use, but I will defer to others on this.

The next option is to not have a Print/Print Preview and instead go to a PDF document which I believe can be rendered by the grid that is viewable.
