• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

11 - Summary and Ring Views of Segment PRO

Good Evening Everyone,
Just wanted to follow up on my previous post about pricing.
I have been working on a spreadsheet to help calculate total BF and cost for my projects and have finally reached the point where I believe it works very well. I've used it on several projects and its proven to be pretty accurate but not perfect LOL.. Anyway I thought I would post it here to so hopefully it might be useful to others wanting to have a fairly quick way to know that BF and cost they would have in a particular project.
Attached are the instruction sheet and the Excel spreadsheet.
Ill be glad to answer questions.

Thanks
Bruce

Bruce question on spreadsheet
Formulas in cells C51, C52, E51, E52, B61 & B62 are only adding up the first four species.
Looks like you need to extend those ranges.

Let me know if I am reading it wrong
Thanks
Bob

Good Evening Bob,
Good Catch LOL, not sure why it didn't save those extra 2 columns but it is fixed now :)
You should be able to copy and past your woods and prices from your current sheet into the corrected version.
Thanks for the feedback and glad its working for you.

I just checked version 1.1.028 and it still has a problem when you sort the summary by (for example) outer ring diameter. This would be a common sort for anyone making a bowl. The "sort" is done correctly but the display is not done well, and when you try to print it out....like to actually use the data....it turns to gibberish.

Cameron,
The Control I'm using for the grid is very quirky (that's a technical term, btw). Since I cannot modify their compiled code, there's not much I can do to fix this problem. There's a chance that investing in a different control could resolve this, but it would be a big expense and a lot of work and I'm reluctant to make the investment or take the time.

That's why I added the ability to click on Export which opens the data in Excel (or the like). That is the perfect place to do whatever makes your heart go pitter pat with regards to sorting, etc. You can also use the full power of Excel to format the document for printing.

I'll link to to an example of me using Excel to do something similar to what you describe, including formatting the data for printing. Watch 'Part 1 - Design' at the following link:
Title: Beginner's Project - Open Segment Christmas Ornament

Basically, since I have limited control over the data in a grid, I cannot start to duplicate even the simplest functionality of something like Excel, so instead, I see my role as creating and gathering the data with an easy way to get it into the place where you have all the power you ever wanted or needed. It lets me concentrate on features that can only be done in my software.

I am curious, though, after 20 years of segmenting, I've never thought about sorting a design by ring diameter. What is the purpose of doing this?

OK.... I'll admit it. I'm using Segment Pro for an unintended use. I use it for designing my vortex bowls. Just for example lets assume I have 6 slabs 1/4 inch thick. If I wanted a straight sided bowl it would be a simple task. If I wanted a 3/4 inch thick wall (just an example because the math is easyvase106.JPG vase106.JPG vortex bowl 102.JPG ) then the inner "radius" would be 3/4 less than the outer radius and with 6 rings that would mean 3/4 = 6/8 or each ring would be smaller by 1/8 in radius so that after the first ring from each board is cut the second ring will be large enough to continue the progression. However, I don't like straight sided bowls so I use Segment Pro to adjust the shape (or use an entirely different shape) and then use the summary page (inner and outer ring diameters) to check if they will fit my slabs. If they don't fit I can adjust the shape on the left window to "maybe" make it fit. If it still doesn't fit then I try another shape. The thing that makes this easier is your "sort" feature in the summary page where I can sort on outer diameter. (The important items for me are ring number, outer diameter, and inner diameter). The sort feature "sort of" works.....meaning it works but not well. The sort ends up with two lines per ring rather than one....which is OK but not ideal. The problem comes when you try to print this. Those two lines per ring turn into about a quarter page per ring and a lot of empty space when you try to print it. I end up having to copy the data directly from the screen rather than printing it. This seems a waste. The feature is there...it just needs a little tweaking to make it work better.

This seems like a perfect solution for Excel where you can keep only the columns you want and then sort all rows or move individual rows so that you have all the rows for one 'slice' together. After you watch that tutorial, let me know if you think that is the case.

I should have said "the inner 'radius' would be 3/4 less than the outer radius and with 6 slabs (not rings) that would mean 3/4 = 6/8 or each ring would be smaller by 1/8 in radius." For example if slab #1 is 12 inch OD and 10.5 inch ID then slab #2 would be 11.75 inch OD and 10.25 inch ID. By the time you get to slab #6 the first ring is 10.75 OD and 9.25 ID. The next smaller ring would be 10.5 OD and 9.0 ID and will exactly fit inside the remaining part of slab #1. So you can easily continue the progression for a straight sided bowl.

Thanks..... the export feature should work fine. The tutorial on the open segment ornament answered all my questions.

I have done exactly as you describe using Woodturner PRO which was designed to let you change each row's diameters explicitly. I then select a species for each row that matches the slice.

In the attachment below, I started with a profile with straight walls (but there could have been a curve). I then changed the wall thicness until I could see how many slices I would need to be able to be able to cut concentric rings for each slice where the one cut would be the outside of one ring and the inside diameter of the next ring. I determined that six slices would let me do this. I then painted each sixth ring with a different species for identification purposes only. I then exported this date to a .csv file and used Excel to put those rings together.

It's mostly a manual process, but is simple to do and just takes a few minutes. This is a good use for Woodturner PRO because some of these features will never be put into Segment PRO. However, it would be far faster to do something similar in Segment PRO because it is so easy to change the wall width and change the wall profile.

There is a good chance that a future version will have some ability to do some of this for you, but I am certainly not promising anything - especially a delivery date - at this time.

I have made a urn and now want to have a summery printed out. I moved it to a spreadsheet but having
trouble printing it out. From what I see there is a dotted line that cuts out the last row so when you
print it there are two sheets, one for all the rows except the last one and it is printed on a second one.
How do I move that dotted line to show all the rows ? Also in the SP summery view the last two rows
are highlighted by a green band. This also make it print out in two pages. How do I print out all the
summery on one page ?

There are lots of different ways but here are a few...

First, decide what columns you don't need (there are probably a lot of them). Right-click on the header of a column you don't need and click 'Delete...' from the context menu.

Second, change the width of one or more columns. Hover over the column header and as you move to the right border, it will change into a pointer that lets you drag the right border of the column header to the right or left to increase or decrease the width of the column.

Third, click on the Page Layout tab and then look in about the middle of the screen for 'Width: Automatic' and change Automatic to 1 Page. This will force the entire document to be resized horizontally so that it will all fit on 1 Page. You can also do this for the height.

I always delete the columns I don't absolutely need so that the data I really need is easy to find quickly. I then click on the cell that is at the very top left of the sheet and this selects the entire sheet. I then change the font to something large and then use the Third method to force it to all fit on a single page, both height and width-wise. This gives me an easy font to read, knowing that it will always fit on a single pate.

If you are using Excel, you can shrink to fit the data. Most spreadsheet programs have that feature. Use the help function
For excel
Click on the Page Layout tab.
Look for the page setup box, on the right side is a small dialog box. click on it.
In the dialog box select "fit to 1 page by 1 page"
The select print.

Another possible issue. Don't forget to set the print area. Highlight (drag) just the area (rows and columns) you want to print then under "page layout" select "print area", and then "set print area".
