11 - Summary and Ring Views of Segment PRO

This tutorial will help you understand how to get the most out of the Summary View and how to use the Ring View from Segment PRO:

Let me start by saying I don't do painted segments, only feature rings at this time. On the summary it appears the board length is the total length as if all segments were one species. Do those of you that do painted segments build a spread sheet by species to determine what cuts to make?

I am going to add a some new information regarding this. The problem is in coming up with a number that makes sense. For each row, the board width could be different and so you can't just say how many inches you need like you can if all the segments of that row are made from the same board.

I think the only way to do this in a way that makes sense is to calculate a measurement based on square surface inches, but only for the entire project so that at the end of the report, I can say that you need xxx square inches of each species.

I make a spreadsheet that gives the amount of each species to cut. See the attached document.

Attached is a spread sheet I've been using for years, similar to Tom's.

Thanks for posting this, Art. I do have a question, though - I see the different board lengths for maple on each row and that they are totaled at the bottom of the page but the board widths are different for each row, sometimes double the widths of other rows. Is this taken into consideration or is it not necessary to be more accurate than it is?

Lloyd
You are correct the summary at the bottom doesn't relate to width. It is something I started a long time ago that I thought would give me some idea of total wood required It's more a left over that's really doesn't need to be there. The rest of the spreadsheet is what works and is most important. One thing I liked about Toms is he has the various species horizontal similar to segment pro so each row requires only one line. I might try that but I do want to be able to print on one 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

Art,
I also like Tom's sheet that includes footages for individual species and obviously, it would be simple to add this to Segment PRO as they are just one additional calculation of data that already exists. The problem, obviously, is that it will then exceed one landscape page in width.

However, if I just include the species columns that have been used, I could probably still make it fit, unless someone uses more than five species. In that fairly unlikely event, it would just spill over to a second page.

Feedback requested.

Lloyd,
We both show footages for each species, but the difference between Tom's sheet and mine is I do it on separate lines and he has done it on one line, which is better. Since I wrote you, I printed Tom's sheet and it does print on 8.5 x 11 in landscape mode. The print is smaller than on your summary. But, If you can do what you described above and get it on one sheet landscape, you have a winner.

Lloyd,

That would be great if you could add it to Segment PRO. I do use more than 5 species at times but having this information would save me a lot of time in the future. Would it be possible to add the segment counts you have put on the summary page at the bottom to the print outs, that would be helpful also. Thanks

Evening Everyone,
I have a question / suggestion for the summary view. Would it be possible to add two items to the view
1. a board feet measurement for each species used
2. an estimated wood cost to build based on bf wood cost "input by user on a separate setup page "

Thanks
Bruce

Bruce,

I used to export my data to excel from Woodturner PRO and did a lot of experimenting with this process to see if 1) the calculated data was usable and 2) if there was enough value in the results to justify the considerable expense of developing those results.

I found it to be very useful if I was making 3/4" thick closed segment rings and buying 3/4" stock as there was an apples to apples comparison. Simply applying a board foot cost to the wood gave me a good idea of the cost of the bowl.

Once I started comparing apples to oranges, though, the calculations lost much of the usefulness. Unless you can factor in how you are going to cut thin stock from thick stock (how many layers you will get from a random thickness, etc), the calculations are useful only to compare how much of one species you need compared to others and there is a lot simpler way to come up with those comparisons.

I have had this request before, obviously, but its value is well down when compared to the other things on my list that will always be useful to all of the users and are being requested daily.

Thanks for the reply's Bob and Lloyd,
I currently do use the export feature and do the conversion to get BF and projected cost. Just thought it might be a good feature to add at some point :)

Just a note about a slight bug. In summary view if you drag a column to the top to sort....for example "Outer Diameter", the software responds perfectly and looks correct on the screen. However, if you want to print this result and hit "print" you will get gibberish. For example... a hollowform that in normal summary mode (60 rings) printed in two pages. When sorted by Outer Diameter took 9 pages, was not formatted properly and not readable. I ended up having to manually copy the result from the screen rather than print it.

Oops..... I forgot to mention I'm using version 1.1.027
