• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Closed Segment Project 1441

Like I had mentioned earlier, I am at Ring #13 and I am not quite happy with it so I have re-cut the pieces and will put a new one together next.

Good opportunity to rough turn the inside as well at this point. So here is a picture.

My shop time will be interrupted again today as it is snowing another 2-4 inches. Look at the bright side, My rings will be dry when I'm done shovelling.

The problem is Aluminite while being fairly odorless you need to use a pressure pot after it is cast. Take a look at Zac Higgins Youtube stuff if you want to see more.
He also has a twitch broadcast on Wed. at 4:00 pm Central. The first half of the show he turns stuff cast the week before then he casts some new stuff during the second half. This is the link to his twitch account. https://www.twitch.tv/nvwoodwerks you can click the little upper box and see a recording of one of his shows.

I haven't done any casting other than a couple pen blanks but Aluminite is on my someday list.

Looks interesting Stuart, not sure that I will venture there. I saw some burls that the voids were filled with an acrylic that looked really sharp though.

Glenn your bowl is looking great so far, keep up the good work.

We are at 0 deg F right now, snow is suppose to start about midnight. Snow expected all day Friday and Saturday.

Thanks for the comment on my bowl. I am really pleased with the subtle outline from the tulip wood to the padauk.
We will get what you have weather wise about 1 day to 1 1/2 days after you. Temperature is supposed to plummet here tonight as well and more weather on the weekend. The ocean here can modify things as well, Sunday we are looking at 50 F. We get these terrible swings all the time.

Hopefully nothing happens between now and the finish but if you were turning this bowl what would your finish of choice be? How do you apply what you like?

I use a wipe on poly. Usually gloss or satin. Sometimes I apply the poly while the bowl is turning very slowly on the lathe. Other times I just do very thin applications with the bowl off the lathe.

Thanks Mike. I assume light sanding between coats, I normally use 600 grit between. Do you have a preference between satin and gloss?

I use gloss about 90% of the time. I like shiny things (lol).
Like you I sand between coats. I sometimes apply 2 coats before sanding. I have used 600grit, but also have used 800 or 1000 grit.

Thanks Mike. I think I will get a fresh can of Wipe on Poly to try this time. Just have to decide between Satin and Glossy. Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts.

Row 13 is now on. Why was it row 13 that would give me issues? In the end I did re-cut the ring as I couldn't determine with the slipped joint that I would have the wall thickness to recover the ring.

Glenn, I prefer a satin finish but you can finish with gloss and if you don't like it buff it back with 0000 steel wool. I have some flat work to do but I think I'm going to try and fit in a petal bowl like you are making. I really appreciate the step by step.
