• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Collaborative Bowl Project - Closed Segment

By the time I get all the way around a 48 segment ring. The set up of the glue can make it very hard to shift a piece if the back edges do not line up close enough. By dipping the segment on a damp sponge I had a little more time and it seemed easier to re-position if I need too.

Have you considered printing out the ring view in WTP. The ring view gives you the exact template to work from. Assuming your segments are good in Segment Length, you could glue pairs together using a rub joint. I have even modified the SL in WTP if my segments were a bit larger/smaller than in the plan by +/- the outside diameter till my segments match. For example plans call for a SL of .46 (5.25 diameter ring) mine are really .45. I would adjust the outside diameter of the ring to match the .45. Then print that ring view out for a template to follow. Doing so I have good luck in getting the rings pretty well round.

I don't do much in gluing a ring up all at once, unless its like a 8 or 12 segment ring. For rings of 24+ segments, I build up in pairs.
This is just my thoughts.
Your project is going well. I understand the frustration of small pieces and high segment numbers.

Good to know Bob. I think I may have found a source for the Titebond II Extend locally. Next week when I get a ride I will check it out. I did try to order it online but they emailed back that it was not in stock.

Two more rings glued up today, for layers 12, 13, 14 and 15. Now to prep the wood for layers 16 & 17. Then I need to get some walnut for layer 18. Starting to get close. Will not be the best bowl I'v ever made but learned a lot along the way.

Layer 16 & 17 glued up. Man these pieces seem HUGE compared to the first couple of rows. Next I need to get my walnut. But that will have to wait until Friday, driving down to Madison, WI tomorrow to visit two of my collage room mates. One does marquetry and is also a blacksmith.

Glenn, I've used about half of my 32 oz jug of Titebond II extended to get this far, just so you have a gauge on usage since it's hard for you to get.

I did talk to Woodcraft yesterday and they will in fact ship the glue to Canada. The holdback is the shipping cost which doubles the cost of two 16oz bottles of glue. I guess I need to do a larger order to justify the shipping.

I still hope to investigate a local source I found on Monday before I order outside of Canada. It is becoming more difficult all the time even to buy woodworking equipment locally. I kinda like touching something before I buy. I've wanted a 12" Disc sander for quite some time but there is nothing local other than Busy Bee and I do not like the quality of their product. Delta used to be very prominent here now no companies will touch them. Not sue what happened. Some say they were bad with parts so everyone dropped their line. When you look online most product reviews are very mixed and that makes you leery.

Since I can't be in my shop I have been practicing on my eLathe spinning eShavings. Been a real steep learning curve enhanced by Youtube and Vimeo.

Came across this great video by David Heim

My attempt. (Work in Progress)

Last row #18 the walnut ring, ready to glue up. Change in design, I made it 48 segments instead of 24 per plan :)

865 pieces! How is the turning going? Must be nerve wracking to touch a chisel on it? Did you make any jigs to help steady it and reduce vibration?

I've only been cleaning up the inside and have been only using a scraper, so it is not so scary. Yes I've been using my home made steady rest, I have it on at about row 8. It started squealing about then and it has made that all go away. May have to move up a little higher as I get the last two rings turned. The last row I put on may have to go, there is a glue line showing, I don't know if I didn't get one of the surfaces completely flat or what but if that is the case I'll cut it off and redo it. I'll post some pictures after I figure what course to take. By the way there is pretty good access to the ID of the bowl for turning

Well was not satisfied with that joint.

So off it came and the new ring is glued on and curing.

Here it is before cutting that ring off

Glenn here is a view of the bowl with the steady rest in place

The bowl is turned and second coat of sanding sealer on it. Talk about anti-climatic there is NOT much turning involved. WOW!
