Transition zig zag bowl

This bowl is 6 inches in diameter. The bottom and top is made from solid mesquite. The featured zig zag is maple and walnut. I added turquoise inlace as a highlight to the featured ring. Finish was with 3 coats of sanding sealer, then finished with wipe on gloss poly.

I recently have gotten into combining solid turning with a segmented featured ring. Any comments are appreciated.

I once had a cross grain turning self destruct. Ever since then I have not tried anything like this. Many people do this on a regular basis with no problem. Mesquite is so stable that you have chosen something favorable to a good result. I do like the way it looks. Wayne

M,
I have made several transitional vessels using mohogany as the main species. Never used inlace, but I have had no failures after several years.

Inlace (while a bit high in cost), works well as an alternative to other fillers It works much like epoxy.

It does help to undercut the slot to give the inlace something more to grab onto.

If you decide to use Inlace be very careful. It comes with a warning to use it in well ventilated areas. They really mean it. Whenever I use it now I mix it and keep the piece outside until it cures. I have multiple externally vented air cleaners in my shop but they cannot do much for the volatiles in this stuff. I agree about the undercutting. If you do not undercut it may fall out during turning and sanding. Wayne

I have used Inlace often and yes I have had plugs of the stuff shoot out in the shop. I solved the problem by drizzling a bit of thin CA glue on the inlay/plug which will seep down into the seem and hold fast. Another way would be to undercut as you mentioned above - using a dremel tool or something like that for a plug. Anyway, the CA does work - give it a try.
