wedges between segments

How are wedges put in between segments in woodturner pro? Or can it be done? I want to add some vertical wedges of dark wood between segments on a feature ring shown in the example below.

Typically, vertical spacers are not pie shaped wedges but rather spacers that have two parallel sides. These are much easier to do as you can simply glue them to one edge of each of the pie-shaped segments. This could be problematic if you are adding vertical spacers to a row where the is a lot of curvature to the profile.

All you have to do is specify a vertical spacer such as .25 and you'll see it drawn and the calculation for the segment edge length will be re-calculated.

One good way to visualize this is click the 'Ring View' while looking at a row with vertical spacers.

The only way to have Woodturner PRO add pie-shaped vertical spacers is to use the open-segment ring type. If you override the automatic setting for setting the open segment gap, you can specify the segment edge length of the spacer, but I wouldn't call this a supported feature of WTP since it will not tell you what the angle of the wedge will be.

Using wedges instead of parallel spacers will nearly move the decimal place in terms of complexity in both cutting segments and assembling perfect rings.

"All you have to do is specify a vertical spacer such as .25 and you'll see it drawn and the calculation for the segment edge length will be re-calculated." When I change from flat to open segment I am unable to enter my 1/8 inch spacer. The program defaults to 9/32 and does not recalculate the segment length.

In the right column, uncheck the box that says Open Segments are '4' degrees. With this box checked (the default), the open space is automatically calculated. Unchecking it takes the program out of the automatic open-segment mode and you can then specify your own vertical spacer dimension.

Unchecking this box is also a way for you to make all the open segments the identical width instead of the proportional gaps you get if it is checked.. Uncheck it and then select all the open segment rows and you can specify the width of the gap, regardless of the diameters of the rows.

In the latest build (3.1.009), there is a box in the Project Properties at the right side of the screen that when checked says something like "Auto calculate the gap for open segments" (sorry, I'm not at my computer right now). If you uncheck that box, you then can specify the exact dimension you want the gap to be.

This change was made so that you can now automatically calculate the gap by the number of degrees to be consistent with the way the gaps are found on the SegEasy plates. On both the 18-segment and 24-segment plates, the gaps are four degrees.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.
