Any tips on designing a platter(ish) type of piece?

Here is a segmented platter I made recently, 2¾ x 12⅞, Peruvian walnut, teak, and bloodwood. The floating foot is bloodwood laminated with aromatic cedar. I made this foot in a way similar to the video posted above, except that I used a large forstner bit to cut the recess in the first ring. I think this helps ensure that the recess has a flat bottom. I had difficulty getting a clean edge at the juncture of the floating disk and the second ring, perhaps because of the acute angle or the nature of this walnut species. I may go back and see if I can clean this up.
