• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Segmented Pro question

Hello! Is there a way to change the thickness of a row? I already have a design but I want to make the pieces thicker than what Seg Pro created. I thought I could change it in the summary list but I guess not.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Jim:
Short answer , No. not in Segment Pro.
Yes, in Wood Turner Pro. WTP can modify each ring separately

You can download a free working trial of WTP and use it for 30 days.

There have many project I have designed in SP because of the paint feature. When done I take the summary sheet and recreate the vessel in WTP to make some changes. The ring view in SP helps in laying out the pattern in WTP.

Thanks mfisher! I have the whole suite of software so I'll give it a try in WTP! Any tips or videos on how to do this? Thank you

Your welcome.
You can take the summary sheet from SP and use it as a guide for building the vessel in WTP,
I use the outside diameter and thickness from SP as a guide and enter those values into WTP for each ring.
After that is done you can take a look at the cut away view in WTP to tweak the wall thickness
You can also make the change in the ring you want to increase the thickness of that ring.

If you have a detailed pattern design. Use the ring view from SP as a layout guide in WTP. I have used the ring view in WTP, select a specific segment within the ring, right click to bring up the species list and make the proper selection.

Sounds worse than it is. Once you get into it you can recreate a project in WTP from SP in very little time.

True , if you have a featured ring.

Is that the ring you want to increase the thickness (height)?

If the featured ring is what you want to change the thickness then you can do that in SP,
Go to storyboard and make the change.

In SP you can't change the thickness of the other rings like you can in WTP.

No the feature ring is fine. It is the other rows. * I do not have a planer or drum sander and my lumber is the wrong thickness so I wanted to just change it.

What thickness are you wanting for the rings vs what SP produced.

Just for grins, you could do a Share export of the SP project (json) file and attach it. We could take a look at it and give you some ideas.

If not, have a good one. should not take you that long to recreate the project in WTP.

I'd have to measure what I have but it is much thicker. The plan I used to design it is stating 3/8 thickness for most of the rings. I'd be happy to recreate it if I knew how to set the thickness from the start.

thanks for the file. I will take a look at it today.

You cannot directly transfer / import from SP to WTP or from WTP to SP.

I cannot open your json file. It imported successfully but when trying to open it it crashes SP. Not sure what the issue is.

No problem. It is a learning experience.
Since you said you have the full package of software I would do your project in Wood Turner Pro. It is very easy to set the thickness of each ring.

Your featured ring image (jpeg) can be brought into WTP as a wood species.

Ok, I started to redo the rows in woodturner pro. A bit different than Seg Pro. With Seg Pro there are patterns to use but I cannot find in WT Pro. With Seg Pro I can adjust the height and it will change the design based on this but I cannot find that option in WTP.

How do I import the feature ring from seg pro? Or, do I have to recreate in lam pro?

I take it you created a featured ring design in Lamination Pro.
Did you bring that design into SP? If so, in LP you had to export out a jpg image of your design. That image is what you brought into SP..

The same image can be brought into WTP as a "wood species".

WTP does not give volume.

Yes, Woodturner PRO calculates the volume in real-time just like it does in Segment PRO. You'll see the volume calculation at the bottom of the screen.

A bit of clarity as to why you can't transfer designs between SegPro and WTPro...
Woodturner PRO keeps all details of every row in the file that is saved to the disk. This is what makes the software so flexible in that you are in charge of everything that happens. SegPro, on the other hand, is a rules-based piece of software that does not need to keep track of details by row because the design consists of a Profile with a specific height and the software follows its rules to construct the vessel for you. You are in control of setting the defaults the software uses but beyond that, the software is in charge and that is what makes SegPro so fast and easy to use.

Because the two programs are night and day different, it isn't possible to transfer designs between them. The key is to made the decision before you start as to whether the bowl you are going to design is a 'standard' segmented bowl or a non-standard project where you want to vary details down to the segment level. If it will be 'standard', SegPro will let you design it in far less time than it would take with WTPro. If it is non-standard, WTPro is your only option but it gives you a complete suite of capabilities that far exceeds SegPro.

If you design a Feature Ring in Lamination PRO, that design can be imported into either SegPro (as a species using the 'Export Image' button), or directly into WTPro by first selecting the target row by double-clicking the row and then click the Export to Woodturner PRO button in Lamination PRO and follow the instructions. This is very simple.

I hope that helps.

Thank you Lloyd! I am trying to make an urn. I chose a pattern in Seg Pro but the rows are thinner than I want and cannot find where to change. I then went to WTP and started a new project by entering the info from the summary in Seg Pro. However, because I made the rings thicker it is ending up being too big but I cannot find where to do adjustments like height. I am in the process of trying 3D pro but my drawing capabilities are not the level I need to recreate the design I chose in Seg Pro.
Any suggestions?
***mfisher has been helpful but my brain is lagging
Thank you
