• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

New to segmenting

I am a novice turner and am just now getting into segmented bowls. I apologize ahead of time for all the questions i will be asking.
I have purchased the WP, SP, and LP and still learning. I have watched most of the videos and still watching.

My first question is understanding the numbers in the summary print out. What do the numbers represent? Which ones are important?
Will someone explain it like I'm a 3 year old?

Welcome to WTP forums.
No need to apologize for asking questions. That is how we all learn.

The summary sheet produced by WTP is your cut list. It tells you what you need to know to construct the segmented ring
WoodTurner Pro has a pretty good HELP sections. Besides the videos you have watched I suggest you read the different sections from the help menu. The help explains the different terminology.

Row Type = states what type of ring the row is made of (ex: disk, flat, open segment,)
Segs = the number of segments that the ring is composed of (ex: 12 means 12 segments)
Board thickness = how thick (tall) the ring should be after sanding.
Outside Diameter = the maximum diameter of the ring once turned perfectly round.
Inside Diameter = the minimum diameter of the ring once turned perfectly round.
Edge Length = the exact length of each segment's long edge required to achieve the desired diameters.
Board Width = how wide the board needs to be to ensure enough glue surface between rings.
Eco Board Length = The minimum length of the board needed to cut out the planned number of segments.
Grain match = Minimum length of the board needed if you are cutting the segments for grain matching.
Miter Angle = the angle the miter must be set to produce the desired segments to make the ring.
S1...S5, If you have different species of wood for a ring it gives the total of segments of that species needed for that ring.

Attached is lesson plan I wrote years ago. It may help you understand the terms and the WTP software. Much of it is a cut and past from the help file within WTP.

Great read. Thank you. I'm using SG so the summary looks different but if I read you right, the measurement between the board stop and the saw blade is the segment end length (the S.E.L. dimensions) ?

yes,
Remember to measure using the miter angle from the blade to the stop.
- One thing I do is using a test piece of wood , cut one end at the miter angle. Using a digital caliper set the segment edge length., mark the test piece of wood. Using the test piece set you stop block. Cut the test piece and check the SEL. Make adjustments.

- When ready you should don't let sawdust get between the stock and fence. keep it clean.
- Preparation of your stock is important. If you need a 1" wide stock make sure the sides are parallel.

Many segment builders have gone to this concept. Easy sled to make. Works well.
