• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Segmented base

Is it standard practice to use a 'disk' as the bottom of segmented turnings? I see two concerns, 1) is the end grain/side grain problem as the bowl is being turned or sanded and 2) the look of not having the bottom "ring" the same as the rest. Granted, inside the bowl there is a nice look at the bottom rather then the points coming together but the outside look doesn't thrill me. To combat this I built a bottom ring to cover the 'disk'. Then the question would be, does Segment PRO have a way to build the bottom 'layer' as a ring rather then a 'disk' ? Seems like the default is always a 'disk'.

Reading and talking to turners the opinion seems to be that a solid bottom is ok Some say to keep the disk under 5" to reduce the risk of wood movement. Of course you can make a segmented bottom. Malcolm Tibbets likes the floating bottom. (See attached article)
The majority of the turning I do have a solid base. It is really up to you.

WoodTurnerPro allows you to make the base ring a segmented ring. Segment Pro does not allow you to select a segment ring for the base.
You are correct that in SP the default is always a disk.

For full control of your design WTP is the software to use. SP is for those wanting a quick and simple way to design a vessel.

In Segment PRO, if you are making a Feature Ring bowl, you can go to the Storyboard and there is an option there for the disk to be segmented.

The same option does not exist in a painted segment bowl because there is no need for a Storyboard for a painted segment vessel. However, if you want to have a segmented base on a painted segment bowl. Switch to a feature ring with a segmented base and get the cutting instructions from that Summary and then use the Summary for the painted segment bowl to build the rest of the bowl.

Thanks Lloyd.
Forgot about the featured Ring bowl option in SP.

I use both programs. I tend to use SP for the paint feature and recreate in WTP. Both are excellent programs.

When I get some time, I’ll see if I can find some real estate on the Details pane to move the option for making the disk segmented from the Storyboard page. It should be an option for all bowls.
