• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Modify base size and species

If I load a plan and then try to change the base diameter by moving the profile dots, I get frustrated because I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason as to properly moving the profile.
Also, I have been unable to set or change the species for the base.
Any advice or where to look in tutorials?

Hi Clyde: Based on how you stated your question I believe you are dealing with SP (Segment Pro)
- If you are happy with the profile but want to make the base smaller you can use the diameter less/more buttons. By doing this the whole vessel will reduce in diameter. Use the summary view to check the base diameter till it gets to the diameter you want.
- If you have WTP, you could use it. WTP give you full control of each ring. including the base.

In SP open up the pallet window. The number 2 column (disk) is the base. double click on the pallet your using. A drop down list of wood species gives the current choices you have to use.
The number 5 and 6 videos will answer your pallet questions. The vids are in the video tutorials/software/segment pro.

Thank you very much for your help. Both things worked well.

Clyde,

I don’t know why you’re not able to move the dots but I’ve never seen a situation where dots couldn’t be moved. If you are needing to move more than a couple dots, though, you should just draw a new profile.

There are two buttons above the Profile window: Clear and Reset. If you click Clear, the dots (and the vessel) are removed but the adornments you have create (painted segments, feature ring, tornado pattern) are kept in memory and when you complete a new profile, the bowl will be exactly as it was but with the new profile you created.

If you click on Reset, it is like you stopped the software and restarted it and you will be staring from scratch.

When you draw a profile, you must start at the top where your first dot it the outside diameter of the top of the vessel and remember that the blue squares are 1” x 1”. Add new dots as you traverse from the top to the bottom of the vessel and fewer dots are better than more dots. There is no need to add more detail because the detail is added when you are turning. The profile is simply to create rings with the correct outside diameter.

Your last dot needs to be near the bottom and should be placed where you want the outside diameter of the disk to be. As soon as you place this dot, the vessel is drawn with your adornments and you can now move the dots.

In moving dots, you cannot move a dot above or below the neighboring dots. If you need to do this, click Clear and draw a new profile as you like.

If you need more control than this, you should use 3D Design PRO and Woodturner PRO as Mike suggested. In 3D Design PRO, you are in complete control of both the outside and inside wall profile. In Segment PRO, the software does the best it can to create an inside wall profile based on how the outside profile was drawn. The problem is that there is often not enough information and the inside might not be drawn as you would draw it if you were drawing it yourself. If that is the case, 3D Design Pro will do exactly what you want because you place all the dots.

Once you use 3D Design Pro and Woodturner PRO, you may like that you are in total control and can do staves, compound segments, wheel arrangements and are free to make changes clear down to the segment level. There is more of a learning curve because of all the power it contains but it is not difficult to use.

The key is to make the decision of what software to use when you start a new project. If you are making a gift, a donation, a cremation urn, a painted vessel, a tornado bowl or any other ‘standard’ segmented bowl (roughly 75% of all segmented vessels are standard), us Segment PRO because it is fast and easy and gets you into the shop very quickly. But if you want to push the envelope, vary the properties of the rings or do something that the automation of Segment PRO doesn’t give you the results you want, use Woodturner PRO and do whatever makes your heart go putter, pat. As Mike will tell you, the more you use Woodturner PRO, the more you will want to use Woodturner PRO.

If you still have problems with Segment PRO, make sure you install Zoom video and I’ll share screens with you where I can see where you’re having difficulties. Drop me an email and I’ll be glad to help you out. I guarantee you that Segment PRO will do all it needs to do as long as it the vessel is a standard vessel.
