• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Having issue with WTP randomly shutting down

Alex Garcia

Running Windows 10 on a Dell 3743 i7 with 8.00 Gb ram. I have created a new turning and, occasionally, while I am working on it, WTP will just shut down and I am not sure why. When I create a new turning, I typically create files for multiple segment counts and save each file separately with the appropriate supporting files. Since there are no logs, it is difficult to tell if it is corrupting memory or maybe just a heap size

I am not sure I understand what you mean by "I typically create files for multiple segment counts and save each file separately with the appropriate supporting files. ". It would be helpful if you posted your WTP files to see if your issue can recreated on another computer and take a look at the file.

I have been using WTP for years. I can recall a few times when WTP crashed/shut down. For me it happened when I had a few programs open at the same time.

Mike,
I will create a .wtp file with 16 segments, save it, change the segment count to 24, save that one under a different name, change the segment count to 32 and then save that one. At some point during this process, the system will crash with an error (I'll get a screen print next time) or it will shut down all together and I have to restart he program. I don't think the .wtp file is bad or wrong, I think it is the system misbehaving.

Alex. I just took an old sw bowl design I had and did 16, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96 segments. Saving after each time under a different file name. I had no issues.

Hopefully you have kept your license ID somewhere. I would suggest you uninstall WTP. Shut down your PC and restart. Do a new download of WTP from the website. (WTP 3.1.016) and reinstall. See if that clears up your problem. Getting a screen capture would be great. If the problem persists you may want to send Lloyd a message.

I have not experienced what you are going through. The few times I have had WTP crash and shut down is when I was in the Vessel View and using the continue rotation feature.

Alex,

If you have access to a 2nd PC, you should install Woodturner PRO on it and try performing the same task with the same file on the second machine. I am confident you will find that you will have no problems on the second computer. The reason for my confidence is that it is now very expensive for me to make changes to Woodturner PRO because it was written 20 years ago with C++ with Microsoft Foundation Class (MFC) extensions which was discontinued a number of years ago. To compile the code now, I need to work with a 3rd party that has a development system that hasn’t been upgraded for nearly 10 years. Their charge to do this is very high and that is why there haven’t been any changes for many years.

With as many users of Woodturner PRO as there are, if there was a problem resulting in abnormal ends, I certainly would have heard of it. I use it every day and I’ve never seen an abend as you describe.

In my experience, these issues are normally seen when the software requests computer resources which are not delivered. This could be request of the processor, memory or trying and failing to write to physical memory. It could also be a security issue where we are denied access to I/O at a time where it should be granted.

On another topic, though, instead of making multiple files and saving them in various locations, you might consider using the New Plan functionality of Woodturner PRO. By default, you are using the default plan which is named ‘My Plan’ and you’ll see the name of the current plan in the upper left corner of the display and also in the Outline tool in the right column where ‘My Plan’ is the only plan that that exists under the Plans category. If you right-click on Plans, a popup menu less you ’Add New Plan’. When you do this, you’ll give the new plan whatever name you like and you can either start with a blank plan or you can start with an existing plan. If you pick the existing plan, you are now working on a completely new plan and you can change it however you like and when you click File > Save, your saved file will now contain two (or more) plans. You can have any number of plans inside a single .wtp saved file.

I have found extensive use of this feature but it is not well documented and I need to fix that.

Thanks, Lloyd, I'll have to give that a try.

Mike, I'll have to do some searching through old emails for my Key. It has been awhile since I got it. Thanks

Your license code(s) may be listed if you go to your preference settings for this forum.
- click on your name (top bar right side)
- click on preference and scroll down.
If the code is available it would be in a box auth code

Alex,

I do see your code on your preferences page.

Make sure you keep the code in hard copy. As the only employee of Woodturner PRO, if something happens to me, there won’t be anyone to look up your code or make you a new one.

In the event that something does happen to me, the website will likely go away so it's a good idea to have a local
backup of the installation files. When you click a download link, the installer will be placed in your Downloads folder. Copy that file to a backup location - a backup disk drive, CD, thumb drive, etc., and with your code you'll be able to re-install the software anytime in the future.

I saw that but I thought that was for the SegmentPro Software. I will write it down.

and I thought you were immortal ;). WoodturnerPro/SegmentPro will be around forever!

Alex,

All codes that unlock Segment PRO end with ‘X’. I did this to help me quickly identify some codes.

I’ll look up you code(s) and email them to you.

I’m doing my best to stay safe, but if you’ve seen the crazies in Portland lately, all bets are off.
