My 1st Project
Latest woodturning project.
Christmas ornament. Segmented, hollow form, 190 Pieces It is 8 Inches tall and 5 inches wide. Wood is; Maple, Walnut (Dark wood), and Paduk (orange). A lot of fun in the last 4-5 days and a nice mind challenge.
Had a few hiccups along the way.
1st turning 1st couple of row and catching a segment searching for pieces in sawdust pile LOL. then turning row 5 with no support.
Tricks I learned
Don't connect 1st row to Walnut! it splits if you have a catch.
Fix for me was to glue a 1/4" piece of MDF (not the walnut) as the 1st Row glue all rows up to the center row together.
Then using Fostenr bit drill 1 1/2" out of center of 2nd row (After drilling the 1 1/2" Part off the segments.)
Make a tenon from 1 7/8" Dia x 1/2" thick walnut. Glue this piece to your head stock spindle and cut your tenon to fit into 1 1/2" hole about 1/4" deep and bottom.
I also drilled a 5/8" hole for a tenon fit the top and bottom fennel's that I later installed.
After installing the new bottom row Tenon i cut and glued a 1/4" thick MDF to row 5 pieces. giving me a temporary structure so I could turn the outside and inside surfaces.
Parting the MDF off before joining the top to the bottom.
I also glued 80 gritt sand paper to a 3/4" x 1" X 12" piece of plywood and used this to take the sharp corners of the outside before using any turning tools.
I hope this makes sense took me a few times of throwing pieces across the room LOL.
