Greek Key feature ring

I wanted to build a distinctive feature ring and and took it as a challenge to construct maple greek key design (continuous line) against a dark chechem background. The bowl is about 12" across and about 6" high. The combination of chechem and maple created some challenges, as the chechem is very dense and heavy and turns quite differently from the maple. After completing the feature ring, I built the rest of the bowl around it, using Woodturner Pro to get the dimensions right.

Charles I am going to make a urn and wanted to try my hand at a Greek key insert. I was looking at your bowl and it looks like the top row of key has 3 small picas boarded by two long ones. Sure would like a more detail info on how to make a Greek Key.

Thanks Bob for the video. I now know how to make the Greek Key. I just will have to take the size of the ring I am making to see what size pices I need to cut for the Key. Again thanks and I am sure I will be asking more question later.

Bob I do have one question my feature ring will be a 12 segmented ring 5 1/4 out side and 3/8 in side diameter. Was thinking of a 16 segmented ring but was not sure if the other 12 segmented rings would line up right.

You will need to scale it. If you go 16 segments the elements of the Greek Key may have to be thinner? Or bigger diameter?

After an extended absence I'm just now getting back into segmented turning. Probably by now, Lester, you have replicated Bob's technique and moved on. In case you are interested, I started the same way Bob did, using graph paper. However, I knew I needed to have the wood grains all going horizontally. I also observed that the inside two vertical components of the key were mirror images of each other (one turned upside down) and the next two out were the same (one turned outside down). I then lamanited the woods together into strips with the grain going the right direction after crosscutting, and used the top-to-bottom solid color segment as a spacer that I cut as segments to join the otherwise flat keys. These spacers I started out wider than the other vertical components, and turned it down to where it was the same width.
