• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Greater accuracy for Outside Dia

Scott:
Just curious on why you are interested down to 100ths for OD?

I am not aware of how to change the decimal settings. in SP. You could use Woodturner Pro if you have that software. It gives OD down to the 100ths.

Hi, My last project had 43 rings, each .22 inch thick. Can you see were under that circumstance, .1 inch is not fine enough? i need about .03. my past project have been designed with SP then recreated in WTP for cut information. I would like to do it all with SP.

I could go to metric but that is not going to be fun. I could export it and convert back to inches, but when i export, the OD comes as a Char string, so i can't easily convert using spreadsheet functions. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I do the same thing at times. Develop a pattern in SP and then recreate in WTP.

Here is an example of the approach I use. Doesn't matter which program the cutlist is developed in.
If I want a ring 4.48" OD with a 3.80" ID (inside diameter), I would build a ring with an OD of 5.0 and an ID of 3.5 ID. It is in the final turning I go for the exact ring size. I know it wastes more wood. I just like the flexibility the overbuild gives me. At least SP gives SEL down to .001

Hopefully Lloyd will give a better answer. You could ask him to put it on his wish list for SP

Scott,
I learned a long time ago I can’t please all the people all the time so I try to please most of the people most of the time. Most (99.x%) of the people don’t want to read extra digits when they are not needed and with the control I’m using, I do not have the ability to let the user specify the number of digits. I do have a suggestion, though.

I’m a big believer in optimizing the summary, allowing me to cut multiple rows with the same board width. It takes only seconds to remove the wood at the lathe and it can dramatically speed the time it takes to cut segments. Perhaps in your case, you would only want to do it two rows at a time but even that will save a lot of time. When I do this, I simply increase the wall width by a fraction (.1” in your case) and I have never run into an instance where the wasn’t enough wood to create my desired wall profile.

If this isn’t going to work for you, Woodturner PRO is the program that lets you do whatever you want to do. As I continually say, Segment PRO is targeted to build ‘standard’ segmented bowls with a minimal user interface.

I am moving towards a process that will let you export a Segment PRO design to be opened in Woodturner PRO. While this sounds like it should be simple, it isn’t. There is almost no similarity between the two programs as to how the data is used or saved. However, it won’t be the hardest thing I’ve done and it would be a great feature so I intend to do it. I can’t promise a time, though. Since the AAW Symposium is in my home town (Portland) this June, I’m am very involved from my turning clubs in helping with it and I’m on the board of Segmented Woodturners with a LOT of responsibilities for the October symposium. Still, I’ll try to carve out some time to do it. I don’t want to use a consultant because they would have to work with two different code bases in different programming languages.

I can simplify it by having the first iteration create the bowl with all the properties except the individual painting of segments. Since that should be 90% of the effort, though, it would be a good place to start.

Lloyd, I would love to see an export to WTP from SP. What I see is being able to take advantage of the paint feature of SP and importing into WTP for any final detailed tuning , (like ring thickness).
I can recreate the SP in WTP. It just takes a bit of time. Love both programs.

Thanks for the suggestions Loyd, I programmed in C and assembly for 20 years. I have some clue of what it takes, and i have a hard time understanding how you've done it, an outstanding job of producing software that works wonderfully. How you were able to do this as a one man show is hard to comprehend. We as a wood turning community are the winners. Thank you!!

I did come up with a way to solve my issue. I changed the settings in SP to metric, use that somewhat more accurate number to export the the info. then use spreadsheet functions to strip extra character, value function to convert to numeric, and finally convert back to inch measurement. I like to have about .03 inch accuracy for OD, this close enough.

The potential ability of moving from SP to WTP that will make life even better.

attached is my latest turning 2700+ segments

Scott, what a great piece you made. Maybe someday I will get there. You and others inspire me to improve.
