Board width vs board thickness

Still trying to learn LaminationPro. I notice the information at the bottom left of the screen shows "Board Width". Using Laminate Wizard, I select 2 boards, each of 24 mm, which I assume to be thickness. The Board Width info does show 48mm, the sum of the two boards.

So, to me this is now Board Thickness, or Laminate Thickness. The Board Width is only of importance in regards to Board Width as shown in WoodturnerPro - which depends on bowl wall thickness and number of segments. Correct?

If I am following you, yes your correct.
Starting in LP. When you glue up two boards of 24mm width, the lamination (or now created board) of 48mm width. What is important is the boards you are using are thick enough to accommodate the wall thickness in your bowl. (see segment image)

In an example of making chevrons you start by laminating three boards together (Chevron 1). When you make the cuts and glue the pieces together in pairs to make the zigzag pattern (chevron 2). The red box shows where you would cut to determine the segment height (thickness) for use as a featured ring.

Basically the width in lamination pro becomes the thickness in woodturner pro. The thickness in LP becomes the width in wtp. The reason for bowls the board is rotated 90 degrees.

Hi mfisher - sorry I am still confused. I guess I am reading this wrong. So, does the starting point (diag1) represent boards glued EDGE to EDGE? I had assumed laminate meant glue them larger flat surfaces together.
 
Yes , it is edge to edge. Give a bit and I will post a detailed lesson on how to make a simple chevron (zigzag pattern ) in LP.
 
I see it now! Glued edge to edge easily explains how to make a chevron, and from there a diamond, etc, etc.

I just find the instructions and details in these programs a little lacking. Am I the only one?
 
The vids are pretty good. The help features in the software is pretty basic. Your doing the right thing in posting to the WTP forum.

A couple of things to keep in mind when using LP. First you really need to have your bowl designed in WTP. In WTP you have established the diameter and number of segments of the featured ring, thickness (how tall), the width and the segment length you need to make the featured ring.
example the featured ring is 12 segments, 8" in diameter, 1.5" thick (tall), a segment length of 2.14".
The thickness and SL numbers are used in LP.

By playing with the First Cut width (upper left corner) you can change the repeating unit width (that is two cut strips glued together. The repeating unit size is the segment length

The export region size (red triangle) is your segment height . Changing the set cut angle will show how the chevron will look at the segment height you want.

What threw me was the definition of "Laminate". Every dictionary I consulted implied the process would result in something like plywood. I think the true definition of what LP means is a "butt joint", or "edge joint".
Just for interest I have put up my latest bowl as an avatar - done before I discovered WoodturnerPro and its associated programs. It was done with pencil & paper calculation, 'laminating' the 3 layers of 3 species to create a woven look in the feature ring.

nice. Glad the confusion is gone. I have found that Lloyd's software is the best out there for us segmented turners. The forum here also provides good information.

I am going to move this thread to the LP support section.

I can see how the word 'lamination' could be confusing because plywood is made of stacked laminated pieces of wood. Laminated is not my word, though. The design process of Lamination PRO is a VERY old design technique called Multi-Generation Lamination. There is a great book, now long out of production called Laminated Designs in Wood by the late Charles Rannefeld. It has been hard to find this book, but a Google search showed 9 used copies at abebooks.com for $37.83 USD and that is a much better price than I've seen at other times. The book is full of pictures and drawings for making multi-generation lamination designs and jigs.

His book shows the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation designs you can make using line drawings but the only angles you can use are 30, 45 and 60 degrees. Still, it is a great book for inspirations. Beware, though, that the hundreds of line drawings he shows DO NOT take saw kerfs into consideration. It took me awhile to figure out until I added the ability to my software to use a saw kerf of 0". After doing that, I could quickly match all of his drawings with Lamination PRO.

If you're looking for a good tutorial on Lamination PRO, check out the project I made for making a 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation cutting board, all starting with the same laminated board.
