String Clamp

Very interesting. Someone posted about using string either here or Segmented Turners but I can't find the post. I like how he stressed having the end over a joint.

Seems like it could be a good jig. Wonder how long the strings lasts till it has to be replaced.

Sometime I am going to build one. It should work for .5+ thick rings. Maybe down to .25. Smaller than that I don't think it will work. A metal hose clamp works well for thinner rings.

With this jig, I may go to making thicker ring halves then splitting them on the bandsaw for when I want .25 or less thickness.

Forgot. Bob, thanks for posting the vid.

Thanks for the post Bob. Made this today and it works exactly as advertised. Only took about 20 minutes. Using paracord it should hold up for quite a long time.
Cut an 18 segment ring on my, also new, wedgie sled in 5/16" poplar, as a test, and it held together like a champ. Needed to use a weighted piece of plywood on top of the ring to hold it in place as I tightened the clamp. Thicker pieces will probably not need this step.
Thanks again to you and all the other posters for their help. I'm learning so much here.

Thanks for posting this! I'm working on 24 segment rings for a bowl right now. Rings are 1/4" thick and this thing works great! I just retie my cord when I dry fit my rings and it works perfect every time!

I saw this clamp on Youtube 'Segmented Turner' I think he might have invented it. He has a two platter flattening clamp which he uses in concert with the cord clamp. Below is the video showing everything you need to know about this method. The action is seen almost at the end of the video starting with him glueing up a ring, clamping and flattening it. Note that on smaller segments he centers the wooden end of the cord clamp on glue joint in the ring.

I made a few of these and use them a lot. The one thing that will cause the cord to fail is glue buildup making it stiff and lumpy. Its not easy to avoid this buildup. Im wondering if a soak in something would break the glue down so it can be rinsed off.
