Question about the glue up

I'm attempting to make my first open segment flower bowl. It will be 48 segments per row and 19 rows total. When I put my first row in the seg-easy plate then tried to glue it to the base with the stomper I could not remove it from the seg-easy plate. I know the segments were tight in the plate. I'm thinking maybe a little too tight. What could I do to make this work better? Thank you for your time.

Brandon, first if they are that tight, let the glue dry over night. Then work you why around pulling at the seg-easy plate. keep going around and it will come off. You are going to have to pull pretty hard. Next row don't push the segments in so hard and it will come off easier.

Thank you. I already removed it and took it off the base. I recut the row and will try again tomorrow.

If this is your first open segment project you might want to go over to the follow along projects. There a couple of open segment project, that were built not that long ago with a lot of tricks and problems found and solved. Lots of good information if your just learning.

It's not my first open segment but is my first with the stomper and using 48 segments per row. I have been reading some of the older posts. I'll keep reading. Just didn't see the answer to my question when I read through.

Brandon,
I also had the same problem and I did a couple things to simplify removing the ring without having segments come out. First, I spray the plate with a very fine coat of a silicone lubricant - just enough to make the segments release but not enough to get lubricant on the segments. The biggest thing, though, is to use a very small flat-head screw driver and insert it above one of the ribs of the plates and below the disk or segment above it. With the flathead inserted a few milimeters, raise the handle slightly and slowly and then rotate the plate by 1/4 turn and repeat this, it will only take about two of these to make the entire ring lift from the plate. Since I started doing this, I have never lost a segment and I'm confident you'll have the same results.

Ok will do. Thank you!

For the first couple rows I'm going to use the glue up jig. I will try the stomper and seg-easy plate again.

Almost done with my bowl. just need to glue in the purple heart plug, sand to 400 grit and apply a finish. Not sure what kind of finish to use. I have only used Danish oil in the past. Any suggestions on a good shiny finish and how to apply properly would be great.

I also use spray acrylic lacquer on my open segment bowls. I use about 4 coats and apply while the bowl is spinning at 150 rpm. Does that sound about right. On some of my larger bowls ( more room between the segments ) I have applied tongue oil with a pipe cleaner. Time consuming process but it works.

Brandon,
You should be very proud of this bowl. You've done an excellent job with your segment alignment and it looks like you've been doing this for years. I'm anxious to see where you go from here.

I finished the bowl and it was entered in the AWFS turning to the future competition. It didnt place but won a award from the people that attended the show. Cant wait to make another.

Since we are sort of on the topic, can I hear recommendations on how to remove glue between open segments. I started my first open segment bowl and attempted to remove excess glue with a pipe cleaner but did not have good results.
