• Having problems with video with Segment PRO on a new PC? You could be experiencing one (or both) of two problems. First, if you have an ultra high-resolution screen, the recommended settings might be higher than 1920 x 1080 with a scale factor of more than 100% and the user interfaces for all software written in c# will NOT be correct. Simply change the resolution and scaling to 1920 x 1080 and scale to 100%. Second, if you have a wonky Bowl View, you have an Intel Iris graphics solution and there are serious problems with it. Solution - go to the Drivers page at Intel's website and install their latest driver for your computer. This will fix it. Link: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download-center/home.html

Hi I'm a newbie from Great Yarmouth in the UK

I am from Yorkshire and my mother's family is from Norfolk. I have been transplanted to Vancouver, Canada for the past 42 years.

    48 segment rings

I do most of what has been mentioned, especially the slow setting glue. Originally I started by gluing together 3 segment pieces using friction joints. However, I found that by the time I got to the end things were setting up. So, I went to groups of 4. Then I glue together all of the groups of...

    Layout of the rings

Having tried various methods I settled on using the Stomper, where gravity is your friend. Also, I can use the lathe for other things while the glue dries, such as pen turning. It is nice to get perfect alignment but slight misalignment isn't a major problem since it is easily corrected when...

Processing SegPRO Summary Output for the Shop

Interesting! I have never had a single bad ring using a Wedgie sled. When I first started I made half rings thinking that was necessary. Then I just decided that I will try to make full rings to save time and effort, and have done so ever since. I use JB setup templates and some that I have cut...

Using CNC in segmented bowl turning

Thanks Larry. You have given me some things to think about.

    easy seg fixture

If its cuts flat won't that create rounded corners at the bottom of the cuts?

    easy seg fixture

I am about to try that. I created the vectors and created the toolpaths in Carveco but haven't got around to trying. Did you just use Vcarve or some joint software? How did you support the pieces in an upright position to cut the ends?

    easy seg fixture

Here is the pdf file. As far as I can see Vcarve can import PDF files and extract the vectors. Even then SVG would be better.

    easy seg fixture

Sounds like you have a good deal. Part of the reason that I ended up with Carveco is that a 3 month license came with my CNC. If we can upload SVG files then I am more than happy to contribute that way. Another option is PDF, which is a mixture of vector and text. Some software will allow the...

    easy seg fixture

I don't consider myself an expert on CNC by any means but vector software I do know a little about. Vcarve Desktop and Carveco Maker are similar but Vcarve Pro is a step up from that. The Vcarve equivalent is Carveco Maker+. It depends entirely upon what you want to do. Software like Vcarve and...

    easy seg fixture

I would attach an SVG file you can use with whatever software you use to generate toolpaths if it was allowed by Lloyd. SVG is the lingua franca of vector use and is read by most 2D and 3D software. I use Carveco Maker and I would attach a .art file which uses 1/4" and 1/16" end mills, again if...

Processing SegPRO Summary Output for the Shop

It is quite a complex piece of code. I am loathed to let it out because that implies supporting it, which I am not willing to do. I am retired and looking for a simple life these days! However, if there is interest I will look into whether I could provide the part that determines the setup...

Processing SegPRO Summary Output for the Shop

Sorry for delay in responding. Thinking through COVID fog right now. Firstly, to address the table (segs vs % diff). It is intended to display the difference between the tangent method (see attached diagram) to calc seg length vs simply dividing the ring circumference by the # of segs. The...

    Setting the SEL cutting stop

I do the same thing in my Excel spreadsheet so that I have the correct distance to the blade. So I don't have to keep copying the spreadsheet I wrote a VBA program that takes care of all the conversions needed, including text to numbers and dimensions. For a safe cutting length the min length...

Using CNC in segmented bowl turning

I haven't been active recently in segmented bowl turning. About 2 months ago a I bought a desktop CNC and have been spending time getting up to speed with that. I would like to incorporate my CNC into other aspects of my hobby and that includes segmented bowl turning. I am wondering if anyone...

    Setting the SEL cutting stop

I export the spreadsheet from SP or WTP into an Excel spreadsheet where I calculate the setup blocks down to 1/32" to set the space between the blade and the stop. I don't have the measure anything and it works every time! If I had a 1/64" setup block I could use that if necessary but I doubt...

    Printing

There are quite a few good free screen capture tools, many with image editing/annotation features. Here is a link. I happen to use Snagit which is paid because I have been using it for over 20 yrs.

    Cut segments size discrepancy

The benefits of the Segeasy sled and wedgies are: * Even if the blade is not perfectly square to the table it is self correcting as long as you make the ring with all of the same top faces pointing up or down - mark the top of the board before cutting so you can't get it wrong. * Even if if...

    Sapele segmented bowl

I don't have anything exotic growing in my backyard :(. I do have a good and very generous woodworking friend who makes acoustic guitars and he has all kinds of exotic wood, a lot purchased up to 20 yrs ago when it didn't cost the earth to buy it. He has a beautiful piece of rosewood 6" x 6" x 4...

    Sapele segmented bowl

I haven't made a segmented bowl in a while, been doing other things. The attached is mainly sapele with a walnut base, feature ring of lacewood sandwiched between hard maple, and a mahogany rim. I haven't turned sapele before and soon experienced the potential tearout problem with sapele where...
