    Thickness

A 1/4" thick wall is about right on larger turnings. When I started turning about 22 years ago many turners were going for 1/8" or thinner, but I think it's nice to have a little more weight for durability in case it gets dropped or knocked around and also to help prevent it shattering in case...

    Second Self Designed Segmented Bowl

Nice going Don. For those thin rings you might consider doing them in double thickness whenever feasible and then splitting them to make for easier glue-ups.

    Segment Pro vs Woodturner Pro

That is what I did Mike, first using SP to get the design and then redoing it in WP. I can see that SP would be the best program where the design pretty much covers the whole turning. I agree that using both programs for one design can be a useful strategy.

    Segment Pro vs Woodturner Pro

After designing a few vessels with Segment Pro it seems to me that Woodturner Pro allows more flexibility and user friendliness A vessel designed in WP can contain rings with different numbers of segments. In that way, high count segment rings can be placed where you want to create detailed...

Segment pro/ species not included on summary sheet

Yes, it was an issue with the problem plan. I'll do as you suggest. Again thanks for your help.

Segment pro/ species not included on summary sheet

Thanks to both mfisher and lloyd for your help and explanations. This should keep me out of trouble, for the time being at least. The only other sticky issue I'm having is that after saving the plan, when I reopen it is different than what I saved, including extra rings and changed height and...

Segment pro/ species not included on summary sheet

I had changed the species combos on this bowl 2 or 3 times. I did get the correct species columns on one of the iterations, but I don't know how I did it. Then after the next species change it disappeared again. I was using my default species for the painting.

    Swirl bowl

My first hardwood segmented turning. Purpleheart and Beech, about 6.5 inches Height and width and 720 segments. I experienced some challenges with this turning due to skimping on my ring widths. I will not make that mistake again! Altogether a great learning experience.

Segment pro/ species not included on summary sheet

Thanks, I will give it a try tomorrow (Norway time difference).

Segment pro/ species not included on summary sheet

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure how to send the file to you. When I export it to my document file it converts to a PDF file which wasn't accepted by Acrobat reader as something is corrupted about the file. can I just send you an email with screen shots instead? I will need an email account to...

Segment pro/ species not included on summary sheet

I have painted a design using 3 different species, yet only one species is shown on the summary. Can you let me know how I can fix this?

    Bandsaw "slicer"

Rick, I have sliced the rings seen in the photos above to use them on a practice project. I had to slice the usable part to slightly more than 3/16" (5.5mm), which left a waste ring slightly more than 1/16" (2mm). I did this by sticking the ring to a board with double sided tape and the ring at...

    barley twist vase

I'm getting started a bit slow because I had a heart attack a couple of weeks ago and the doctor said I couldn't do anything for awhile. I hope to start a project that's already planned later this week. It might have some scroll saw inlay incorporated, but I'm not sure how it would look with...

    Open Segment Project - Maze

Great work on this Bob. Really beautiful shape, pattern and color combinations. Are you suffering from postpartum depression?

    barley twist vase

Thanks for the reply Martyn and also the tip on the too-tight fit possibility. I had a look at your fishing vase. Really spectacular work. I will have to show this to my oldest son who loves fishing. I'm sure he will like it as much as I do. Apart from the great overall design, I was also very...

    barley twist vase

Very nice turning. I have also been planning to make a feature ring with the same scroll saw method and I didn't know someone else had already done it. Nevertheless, I think It's probably the best method to make free form designs for a feature ring that have perfect glue lines and you certainly...

    Problems with breakage

This is an old thread, but I want to get my two cents worth in anyway. My only open segmented bowl was in pine and I turned the walls down to 2mm, slightly more than 1/16" thick. I used a hollowing tool with a small round tip I ground from an HSS drill bit. This sounds pretty much like what...

    Printing problems

Thanks for your help with this Bob. I am aware of the rings button and I can order a print from it of all the rings or whatever ring(s) I want . My print preview is fine, but the problem I am having is that the rings print out black with a touch of color showing on the rim. I can only print to...

    Printing problems

Only one problem with the PDF thing is that when I saved the file as a PDF it only saved the picture of the vessel view and none of the other views such as the rings, segments, etc. I thought the whole file would be saved. Any thoughts?
