Segment Stomper Springs and Centering Pins

What is the advantage of using heavier springs for solid segment pieces with the Longworth chuck? Has anyone found a spring source other than buying a second sprinkler?

My second question is what type of centering pins should be used? I purchased my chuck years ago and it works fine but when using it with the stomper it binds and is very hard to get adjusted.

Stuart,

The advantage I have found to heavier duty springs is primarily with closed segment vessels that get heavier as rings are added. This may be a personal preference, though. It just seems to me that if there is resistance present when I push down on the vessel, I have better control over positioning it. With a light-duty spring, the vessel might not even be suspended once too many rings have been added.

I was purchasing heavier-duty springs but then I found that if you use a Hunter model popup sprinkler, it has a much heavier-duty spring and so I now use that model and I like the results.

With regards to your chuck question - is this a Longworth Centering Attachment you got from me? If so, I'll send you a new one as there should not be a binding issue at all.

Lloyd,
Thanks. Yes the Longworth chuck is the one I bought from you many years ago along with the original pvc popup. I've always thought the binding and need to adjust it back and forth to get past the binding was the way they worked because of the curves. If I remember right it was about the time you stopped making them.

Stuart,

the he issue is that the holes in the Chuck must be exactly the same size as the plunger and perfectly centered. If you have made insets to reduce the size of the holes, that could be the issue.

Click the Contact Us link and email me your address and I'll send you a replacement that is designed to work with the current Stomper's plunger.

Ok, I have the stomper, and I see that it could be of some help, but don't you need the Longworth centering attachment to center it around the stomper? Therefore my bowl would be centered perfectly, so I could turn it correctly on my lathe.
Thanks

If you order the complete stomper kit it has the plunger and Longworth centering jig.
