bird design

This may have already been addressed in other posts. I would like to rotate the bird design 90 degrees in lamination pro so that the design faces up. I have looked at the sketch-up video, but it doesn't advise how to import it into lamination pro. Plus I can't seem to get a handle on to how to navigate through sketch-up. Do I have to go through sketch-up? Please advise Thanks.

Hi Tom,

You might find the answers to your question at this 5-page thread where Glenn McCarron documented his attempt at making the Eagle Bowl (he was remarkably successful for only his second multi-generation lamination):

Title: My Eagle Bowl attempt

Once you look through this, let me know what questions you have. If you have not used SketchUp, it is a great program but has a very steep learning curve. As an expert, though, I don't see why SketchUp should enter this discussion at all because it is not needed to make the Eagle.

The thing to remember is that a Repeating Unit in Lamination PRO has two eagles in it facing left to right but the beak on one of the eagles is at the other end of the repeating unit. You need to make a board of continuous repeating units and then cut them apart between each beak and the tail of the next eagle and so this is not on the border of the repeating unit.

It is a fun lamination to make. I've made it four times now and am looking forward to starting again. Most of mine have been for flat projects.

Tom,

After re-reading your post, it looks like you are referencing the SketchUp tutorial on visualizing the Eagle design in a real-world scenario. When I made that tutorial, I had not started Segment PRO. One of my objectives in writing it was to allow segments to be displayed with designs on feature rings that would accurately show what the segment would look like on both the outside and inside of the bowl and, fortunately, I was able to accomplish that just as I had hoped.

So now you simply need to create the design in Lamination PRO at a size that matches the Segment Edge Length from Segment PRO to the width of the Repeating Unit in Lamination PRO and set the height of the feature ring in Segment PRO to the height of the Export Region of Lamination PRO and the design of the segment in Lamination PRO is now exactly correct. You then simply export the clipping region as a species to Segment PRO and add it to your palette. When you now look at the bowl, what you see in both the inside and outside of the bowl will be exactly what you will see after turning the bowl.

It is fun to do this in SketchUp and it builds good skills, but it takes a long time to do and conquering a steep learning curve so I'm glad that this is no longer necessary, thanks to Segment PRO.

Lloyd: Thanks for the info. If i read correctly, Glenn made the lamination with the eagle facing on their sides, but then cut them apart to flip them so they were facing up? He would then have to cut them into segments to glue into rings? I might be wrong on that, but it sounds like that is what he did. Can one start the design in lamination pro, with a change in the initial lamination, and after doing the 1st and 2nd and 3rd generations and sliding and flipping, the eagle is facing upward. What I want to do is brand new lamination's using different woods with different thicknesses to make the eagle facing in different directions. Also to make new lamination's involving other objects, trees, flags etc. How did you create your lamination designs? Sorry for being so dense. Thanks Tom

Tom,

The only way that the eagle can be designed in Lamination PRO is facing to the right. You have to end up with a board that is made up of however eagles you want and then cut the board into individual eagles at which time you can rotate them by 90 degrees.

I can help you size the laminated board to end up with an up-facing eagle if you let me know how big of a bowl you want to make. My bowl that appears on the front page of the home page was 10" in diameter. If that size works for you, I can make you a Lamination PRO file that will duplicate that size if you like.

Also, if you install the latest Segment PRO, the eagle is now a species that is included in the species folder so you can add it to a palette of you choosing. It is just an image, of course so you still have to have the Lamination PRO file sized correctly for your bowl.

Lloyd: thanks for the info. I would like to do a slightly smaller bowl, say 8". could you help me design a lamination. Also, is there a way I can make my own designs, using lamination pro and importing species. My brother Jack has your program too and has made the bird ring. My lathe swing is not quite and much as his. His turned out pretty well. I just signed up for lamination pro 2.1.0.6. Is that the latest version? Thanks Tom.

Thanks very much Lloyd. I just downloaded it. It looks more like your videos. I will start looking through it. Again, any assistance you can provide making the bird lamination for an 8" bowl would sure help. thanks Tom

Tom
Lamination PRO is only for designing different lamination and feature rings. It does not do the design of bowls. For that you need one of the other pieces of software, Woodturner PRO or Segment PRO.

Bob: Thanks for the reply. I was hoping to design different feature rings using lamination pro, not relying on just the samples. I would like to start out with a design concept and attempt to make a feature ring using lamination pro, but there doesn't appear to be an import function. For example how would one design a flag feature ring?

Tom, I don't think it would be possible to do a flag, in Lamination PRO. You would probable have to do that manually.

I've done a flag in am open segment vessel

LLoyd: could you help with the above if I made a bowl with an 7" diameter? Please let me know, I will check back in a couple of days. Appreciate your help. Thanks Tom
