Centering jig for closed rings....

Hey Lloyd,

I don't see a place to order the longworth centering jig that you feature in your stomper vid. Are you still doing those? I know I could make one but I am a turner and my router skills are lacking.

I got confirmation today that the Longworth centering jig for the Stomper will be available on January 17th. I'm still gathering costs, but the target price for the 13-1/2" model will likely be $89 since the cost of plastic has gone up so dramatically in the past few years.

Cool. Please let me know when they are in so I can get one before you run out. I am going to be laid up for awhile and won't be able to get back into the shop until March, but I am definitely going to be spending some quality time with the software, converting my sketches to plans.
 
I would like to know when they are available as well. Good luck to you Alex with what ever is going keep you out of thr shop until March.

Thanks for the well wishes Jim. I need some down time to convert some of my sketches that I have been working on. It seems that when I have the ideas, I can only doodle them out, but I never seem to have the time to put them in WTP. It'll be fun to have the time to explore all of the new features of the software that I haven't gotten to yet
 
I put the date on my calander, so I can check back to see if they are available. Sure would beat the method I currently use LOL...

I had one of Lloyd's old centering devices (Longworth) mounted on a 5 Gal. pail reinforced with 3/4" plywood. So I decided to convert it and leave it mounted that way. I used a 1" x 1/2" PVC fitting drilled to 13/16 since my Longworth was drilled for 1" PVC. Everything went as per the instructions except that I didn't take the time to make a bucket extender (I'm not sure it matters to me) so my pipe is only 13 1/4" instead of 16. No problem for me because I use thick glue blocks which solves the problem. If you do this you will have about 3" of pipe sticking out above the bucket which could make the first ring an issue.

This is a clever idea, but when you fully depress the plunger, if it isn't roughly 7/8" from the surface of the Longworth chuck, I'm not sure how you'll add the first row. What I would do, though is depress the plunger as far as it will go and make a mark at 7/8" and then cut off the plunger at that point. Then drill the hole in the base of your turnings at 13/16" instead of 5/8" and this will work great as long as your first ring is 3/4" thick and you drill the hole to be 1/8".

When you want to make a vessel that is taller than the shortened plunger will allow, simply make yourself an extension of 2"-4" by making a dowel that matches the outside diameter of the plunger and reduce the diameter at one end to fit the inside of the plunger and you'll be golden. The reduced diameter should probably extend about an inch into the plunger.

will they be the right size for the stomper? I have an idea of what to make one just not the outside dimension and the center hole, etc. thanks for the reply
 
The Longworth-style plates that I will have available on January 17th are 13-1/2" in diameter with a 13/16" centering hole. If you choose to make your own, you can make them any size you like. Just make sure they have a center hole of 13/16" and you'll be all set.

i should h also mentioned tha if you have a ring over 12", you can use the jig in an expansive mode by putting the pins inside the segmented ring and centering it from inside the ring. This will let you center an outside diameter of 13" or more.

I just measured the orbit pop up sprinkler and it is .767 and the 13/16 is .812 so that is a slip fit of .045 is this right? If you halve that it would put you at about .022 of at the most on all rings. Is this where you come up with they will only be about at the most 1/64 off?

Yes. I have done a lot of experimenting with centering different rings and a digital caliber always shows it is within 1/32" - 1/64" of being perfectly centered. There are other factors, though - I always make my closed segment rings in half rings- even if it looks like it has tight joints. It doesn't take much longer and it guarantees that all the joints are perfect. Doing this also takes these rings out of being perfectly round.

Still, it is by far the most accurate method of anything I've tried - including centering using a cone attachment on the tailstock which would be the best solution if the lathe were vertical instead of horizontal. Turning on a vertical lathe presents some challenges, though. ;)
