• Are you looking for a coupon code to buy my software? You can get one from lots of 3rd party sites but they won't work. My software never goes on sale and has never been discounted. The only coupon codes that are given is when I give a club presentation and I offer a discount to the attendees. Other than that, everyone pays the same price.

Tried using the little envelope in the top right of the home page, get OOPS!! It looks like the reCAPTCHA (human verification check) was not completed. Please go back and make sure you check the "I'm not a robot" checkbox.
Do not see check box in Chrome, IE 11 or Edge

You earn $200,000 or more a year from your turnings ;)

Sorry, I don't know.

Well chipped away at the $200,000.00 today only $197,00.00 to go We did a craft show up in Door County, WI today. Its a big tourist destination for people from Chicago and elsewhere.

Now are you keeping track or is that my job? :)

Bob
Its your job to track the money. We all trust you :)

Looks like the craft show was a success for you. I admire folks who sell their work. I mostly give items way. If I started selling, it would start making me think its a job. I had one. Don't want another.:D

I find one of the great parts of these shows is talking to the people, telling them about the wood, the finish, how it's made and all the work that involved in the process, most don't have a clue and are truly interested.

I agree. While I have not gotten into the craft shows, I have given tours of the Sun City West, AZ wood club. There is almost always someone working on a bowl on the lathe or finishing one in the assembly room. The guests are amazed at the hours than can go into a segmented bowl. Most have not a clue on the cost of some of the wood.

When I give a bowl as a give , I generally include a little write up on how many pieces, types of wood used. You are correct that most are very interested in how the bowl was made.

I don't know what comes first: How long did it take, do you sell those? The answer is I don't know. I'm usually working on several pieces at the same time so when it's done it's done. No I don't sell. First that would turn it into a job and second the skill of my competition is way beyond my pay grade.

Well sometimes the competition is non-existent. Really the only reason I am sell some of my turnings is my wife is going to these shows to sell her jewelry and I get dragged along as the pack mule and setup and tack down guy. So I told her if I was going to have to be there, I may as well see if someone might want to buy some of my things. I find in most shows I'm the only one there with any wood turning items. In some case the only one with wood. Several items get picked up over and over and admired. The other thing people say is how in the world do you make this, some people are just amazed. For me I really like talking to the people, I have to be there for my wife so this makes my day go faster.

how do you put a price on something that consumes you for hours on end? When i show people turnings that I've made they always say why don't you sell it you could get £100 for that! I am thinking it took me over 20 hour to make that, which equates to approx £5 a hour, thats not including the wood!

Saying this I've made that many turnings now my room is starting to look like a art gallery, Does anyone sell on a regular basis, what do you charge for the work you do while other people are relaxing after work?

Do a Google search for segmented bowls or vases, then click shopping and check out the prices on similar pieces. You might develop a guide to price your work. Don't under price thinking you are just trying to move excess, pay for the wood or just get enough to cover your hobby. Your work should be priced on the quality not that it is made as a hobby. The only time I thought about selling anything was when I made seam rippers and crochet hook handles. They sold okay but to make any money I would have had to approach it as work. I'm retired, I don't work.

i did a google search like you said and i was really surprised at some of the prices, i do have a tendency to de value my work for some reason, might have a go selling one soon, thank you for you advice stuart its appreciated

Martyn,
You'll be interested to know that I have added a new Price Quote feature to the new software - Segment PRO. Clicking a button will immediately show you a selling price of the vessel as it is currently designed. The pricing algorithm is based on a default value you set for the following features: number of open segment rows, number of closed segment rows, total segments, total painted segments, feature ring segment and an upcharge field for exotic woods, surface texturing or whatever. There is a default value for each of these things and you can change those defaults as you wish. When you display the price, you can also override any of those values for this particular bowl.

The idea is that you should be able to work with a potential client on a laptop to design the vessel with their help and click the button to show what the price is based on the current design. If the price needs to be lower, you can do a lot of different things such as increasing the thickness of rows or reducing the number of segments per row - either of which will reduce the price. If it is a painted vessel, you can reduce the number of painted segments which will also reduce the price.

Once you have an agreement on a negotiated price, a Price Quotation in pdf format will be created that has an image of the current design, a description and details of the bowl, shipping cost and payment terms. It will also have your contact information. Once you create your price quote, your design will be automatically saved in the database so that you can open it later.

With this software, you should be able to design a vessel such as a cremation urn, sized for the correct volume of cubic inches, in either a painted segment, feature ring or tornado configuration in minutes and provide multiple options of different specie selections.

If you have no intention of selling your work, the Price Quote button is still a good way for you to understand the relative value of one vessel to another based on the amount of effort that goes into making various styles. Obviously, pricing is fully a function of your clientele, the economy and supply and demand which is why there will also be a discount field that will let you keep your pricing based on a set of defaults, but will let you adjust the price to get the business.

I don't know how many people will use this feature but I can tell you this - I would use it extensively at a craft fair or on a laptop meeting with mortuaries for pricing custom cremation urns, etc. If nothing else, it allows you to establish a starting point for further price negotiations. Until you have that starting point on paper, the likelihood of closing a deal is minimal.

For this thread, I created a petal bowl that is 6" tall, 11.5" in diameter, 1106 total segments with 936 of them painted. It took me two minutes to design and paint and then I generated the Price Quote pdf file. I set the number of segments to 48 as I will have the new 48 and 36 segment 11.75" SegEasy plates in stock in about a week.

I've also attached a screenshot that shows how the price of this vessel was calculated. As you can see, you could simply reduce the price of the painted segments from the default of 30 cents to 15 cents and that would reduce the price by $140.

Now if only I could build it in two days but I've got some tricks up my sleeve that will hopefully move us in that direction as well.

Lloyd

That is very clever when can i buy this new software, i wouldn't mind selling some work in the near future but i cant imagine ever designing turning with a customer, i tend to just make what i feel like at the time. If you agree to make something for a customer theres a certain amount of pressure that goes with that, like if i don't feel like doing anything one night i don't, but if you have someone waiting that a different situation,

Lloyd i have to tell you that i am really excited about this new software its looking great

i will be a day one purchase for sure!

Martyn, did you delete the thread about your bowl that you didn't like? I had a reply typed up but it looks like the post is missing.
